Came Back from Chicago

Last night, my husband came back from Chicago. He was on business trip for four days there. He told me that he had this huge Chicago pizza with four people!

He has visited Chicago several times so far, and this time, he found this Illinois mug at Starbucks for the first time! Because we have been collecting Starbucks You Are Here Collection mugs, I was really glad that we were finally able to add this mug to our collections. :) I'm going to share more photos of this mug in my tomorrow's entry.

Finshed Reading Spark Joy - Konmari Book

Today, I've finally finished reading Spark Joy, which is one of Marie Kondo's books. :)
Spark Joy
As I read the book, I tried to tidy up my home by category according to her method, and I've almost finished tidying up my belongings. My husband needs to do his belongings though. He would like to try Konmari method as soon as possible but has been so busy because of his business trip. In addition, we need to tidy up our detached garage. I know that Marie Kondo suggests not tidying up by location, but it's too hard to take care of our garage at the same time. I hope we can finish our tidying marathon next month. :)

The Most Popular Facial Sheet Masks in Japan

When I lived in Japan, I often used facial sheet masks right after taking a bath. Because most Japanese people take a bath every night (not busy morning), they take an extra time for night time beauty routine. Facial sheet masks are very popular in Japan. When you walk into drugstores in Japan for your first time, you will be surprised that there are so many kinds of facial masks there. Today, I'm going to share with you the most popular sheet masks in Japan. All of them I listed below are very popular and highly rated by Japanese women even though some of them are still relatively unknown outside Japan. If you are looking for the best Japanese facial masks, you should try these excellent ones! :) By the way, when you use a facial sheet mask, I recommend you to use Daiso Japan Reusable Silicon Mask Cover, which prevents moisture evaporation from the mask. :)

Asparagus Is in Season Now

Asparagus is in season through February through June. When it's in season, not only does it taste better but also cheaper. These days, I've often seen that asparagus has been on sale at many supermarkets. :)  It is a good source of vitamin, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc and etc. If you find asparagus at this time of the year, you should get and enjoy delicious asparagus dishes!  :)

Trader Joe's Pour-Over Coffee Brewer Review

Last weekend, I found this Trader Joe's Pour-Over Coffee Brewer. On this package, it read, "the coffee is filtered, but with the rich taste of a French press." Since I am a coffee lover, I couldn't resist purchasing it!
It contained 20g (4 tablespoons) of Brazil medium dark roast coffee grounds. You can make 10 to 12 fl oz (300 to 360 ml) of coffee with it. According to the package, you can make 2 cups of coffee, depending on the preferred strength, but I thought that 12 fl oz of coffee is too small for two people (6 fl oz per person) as compared to that Starbucks Short size is 8 fl oz.

From the bottom of the package, you can see the coffee filter bag.

I removed the black cap, and opened the top of the pouch.

The mouth of the pouch was very small, so I needed to be very careful to pour the hot water through the top of it. The package was pretty firm but very light, so I was afraid if it falls over by pouring hot water into it.

Close the zipper on top and wait for four minutes. Then, pour the coffee into the mug. The taste of coffee was pretty good! :) It's not as bold as coffee brewed with a French press, but it had rich coffee taste. This Trader Joe's Pour-Over Coffee Brewer was only $1.49. It's pretty affordable but not an ideal price if you brew coffee with it at home everyday. Just like Japanese drip coffee bags I mentioned in my previous entry, it's perfect for someone brews fresh coffee once in a while, or it might useful during camping or traveling.

I uploaded this video, How to Brew Coffee with a Trader Joe's Pour-Over Coffee Brewer, on my YouTube Channel.

Marutai Ramen - Instant Ramen

As I mentioned in my previous entry, my husband and I received a package which my mother-in-law sent from Japan. This was one of Japanese foods she sent for us. This Marutai Ramen, which is also called Bou Ramen in Japan, has been our favorite since we were children. Marutai is a Japanese company that makes instant ramen. The company established in Fukuoka in 1947 and started selling Bou Ramen in 1959. I heard that Bou Ramen has been very popular in Kyusyu, and they started selling them in Tokyo too. If you are going to Tokyo, you can probably find ones at supermarkets there. This pack of Bou Ramen which contains two servings of instant noodle and soup is around 100 yen in Japan. You can also find Bou Ramen on Amazon US, but those are pretty expensive. Since our hometown is Fukuoka, this ramen reminds me of our local ramen there.:)
Marutai Bou Ramen

He cooked this Bou Ramen last week. He put eggs, green onions, nori and takana pickles on noodles. He is always good at cooking instant ramen and knows the right firmness of noodles. It was perfect! :)

My Tidying Marathon - Konmari Methods

After finishing reading the Marie Kondo's first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, I started reading her second book, Spark Joy last week. As I read on the book, I decided to tidy up my home according the book. Most people usually tidy room by room, but she suggests tidying up by category.
Spark Joy
Choosing clothes which brings me joy was pretty easy for me, and I actually enjoyed it. I was able to discard 6 bags of clothes which I wouldn't wear anymore.

However, the book category was pretty hard for me. Even though I don't usually read books and think didn't have too many books, they were very heavy and definitely needed to reduce the volume. Most of my books were purchased in order to study ESL and to improve knowledge for my career. That's why my textbooks didn't spark joy. However, they were still valuable, so I decided to sell these textbooks. I also decided to sell the traveling guide book, which my husband and I read through before traveling the Big Island, Hawaii, last year. We think we will travel Hawaii again, but we don't know when we can go there and which Hawaiian island we will travel next. Actually, the Hawaiian book was sold two days later! :) Also, one of my ESL textbooks was sold next day. :))

These are books which bring me joy for now, and I sometimes read them before going to sleep.

These are my books I don't read now, but I would like to read this year.

These were books I wouldn't read anymore and had very low value, so I've discarded them already. I had expected that I would be able to discard more books just like clothing category, but discarding books was pretty hard for me, and I was very tired when I finished it. It's probably because gathering all my books on the floors made my room cluttered temporary. As you might know, cluttered room makes us feel bad. :( Even though I was tidying my room, it looked more cluttered than before. She says tidying by category is tidying marathon. I understood what it really means. Tidying marathon is exhausting just like running marathon, but it has a goal, and I will eventually finish tidying marathon in the not-too-distant future. :)  I've already finished paper category, and I am trying komono category now.

How to Prepare Takanazuke, Japanese Mustard Leaf Pickles

As I mentioned in my yesterday's entry, my mother-in-law sent many Japanese foods from Japan. This was a pack of takanazuke, Japanese mustard leaf pickles. Fukuoka, my hometown, is famous for takanazuke. Indeed, my late grandmother used to make takanazuke from scratch in Japan. She grew mustard leaves to make pickles. At the back entrance of our home, there were always some huge barrels to keep pickles. She also used to make narazuke, umeboshi, miso and so on. Since she passed away, my family has bought commercial Japanese pickles at supermarkets, but when I eat takanazuke, those always remind me of my late grandmother. :)
Takanazuke - Whole Leaves
When you go to Japanese supermarkets, you can easily find takanazuke there. Most of them are already finely cut to ready to eat, but I always choose whole leaf ones because they are fresher and taste better to me. Yesterday, I opened this pack of whole takanazuke and prepared them to eat with fresh steamed rice. I'm going to share how I prepare takanazuke with you.

1. First, open the package and rinse the leaves under running water.

2. Cut them finely. (Now, you can eat them, but I prefer to eat cooked takanazuke because they are savory and taste better.)

3. Cut one dried red pepper finely. Heat two tablespoons of sesame oil in a pan over high heat. Add takanazuke and red pepper. Stir-fry them for 5 minutes or so.

4. Add two tablespoons of ground sesame seeds and stir them thoroughly.

5. Enjoy! It's perfect with freshly steamed rice. :) You can store them in a small container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

A Package from My Mother-In-Law in Japan

Yesterday, my husband and I received this package which was sent by my mother-in-law, who lives in Japan. :) She has sometimes sent some Japanese foods since we moved to the U.S. We really appreciate her kindness. :) I'm going to share what she sent this time with you. Some of them are only available in Kyushu, where is our hometown.

This is Yame Matcha Langue de Chart, matcha chocolate cookies. Only green tea leaves grown in Yame district can be described Yame green tea. I used to have Yame green tea every single day when I lived in Fukuoka.

This is an cup of instant champon noodles. Champon is regional cuisine of Nagasaki prefecture.

This is a package of instant noodles for saraudon which is also regional cuisine of Nagasaki.

This is Shiokonbu, salted dried kelp. This is perfect for seasoning of rice balls. I also make Japanese pickles with Shiokonbu and cucumber.

This is dried laver for rice ball.

This is a pack of dried Japanese radish leaves. I've never tried it before!

These are packs of instant soup. These are perfect for midnight snacks. :)

This is Takanazuke, pickles of Japanese mustard leaves. Takanazuke is famous pickles in Kyushu. I will rinse and chop these pickles and fry them with sesame oil. They are perfect with freshly steamed rice.

This is a pack of dried vegetable and seaweeds. Just add them in any kinds of soup or instant noodle. They will be very useful when we don't have enough time to cook but want to eat nutritious foods.

This is Marutai Bou Ramen, a pack of instant ramen noodles. We used to eat Marutai Bou Ramen when we were children. :)

This is a box of strawberry tarts. Fukuoka is also famous for Amaou, which is a famous breed of strawberries in Japan. Indeed, when I was a child, my next-door neighbors who were growing Amaou strawberries often gave my family plenty of freshly picked strawberries in huge boxes, and I really loved their delicious fresh strawberries. Amaou strawberries are bigger and sweeter than U.S. ones. If you go to Japan, you really should try Japanese strawberries. :)

We opened the package and decided to eat ones!

It didn't have distinct strawberry taste but so good! :))
