How to Grow Green Onions in Water : My 2022 Experiment

       In 2022, I decided to grow green onions in water at home. The main reason was the dramatic price increase, with green onions jumping from $0.25-$0.98 per bunch to around $3. As green onions are essential in Japanese cuisine, I felt the need to grow them myself. Although I generally don’t recommend home gardening to save money (as noted in my previous entry, “Money Saving Mistake I Made #1: Growing Vegetables”), the inflation in green onion prices in 2022 led me to give it a shot after many years. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the experience, even though I only did it for a month. Now that green onion prices have returned to pre-pandemic levels, I no longer grow them at home. However, I wanted to share my experience with my readers. I took many photos for this post and should have shared it sooner. Today, I’ll explain how I grew green onions at home in 2022, inspired by this Japanese YouTube video.

 

What You'll Need

Empty Plastic Bottles

Green Onions with Roots

Scissors

Sharpie (Permanent Marker)

1. Remove the plastic labels from the plastic bottles.

2. Cut the plastic bottle with scissors about 2 inches (5cm) from the top.

         By the way, you'll use the top and bottom pieces of plastic bottles like this below.

3. Prepare green onions. Cut the green tops 1 to 2 inches above the roots. We only need the bulbs with roots, so feel free to use the tops in your cooking.

4. Insert the green onion bulbs into the mouth of the plastic bottle.

5. Fill the bottom of the plastic bottle with water until the roots are almost entirely soaked. Use a Sharpie to mark the water level, so you know how much to pour next time.

Day 1

6. Set your bottles of green onion plants where they can get plenty of sunlight. Change the water once or twice every day.

Day 19

7. Once they’ve regrown beautifully, harvest the tops for your cooking.

         The green onions I grew indoors were delicious with udon noodles. 😋

I've noticed that it gradually fades dark spots. However, I am not sure when I can fly to Japan next time to purchase this one again because we don't know when the coronavirus pandemic ends. That's why I really don't want to waste every last drop of it. 😁

Costco Haul - Wahl Deluxe Haircut Kit with Trimmer and Storage Case (I Cut My Husband's Hair for My First Time!)

      At the end of this April, my husband and I were looking for a hair clipper. He wanted me to cut his hair at home because all hair salons in our local area have been closed due to coronavirus since March 17. The last time he went to a Japanese hair salon was this late February, which was over two months ago. That's why he really needed to get his haircut.



It was very difficult to find an electric hair clipper at stores!
      I remembered that our local Costco used to sell Wahl electric hair clippers, so when we went grocery shopping at Costco, we tried to find ones, but they were sold out at the store. Next week, we also went to another Costco, but we couldn't find one either. Then, my husband told me that home improvement stores also should sell hair clippers, but those have been sold out too. Finally, I found that Wahl electric hair clipper was on back-order on Costco online (It had been out of stock before.), so we decided to order this one without a second thought. By the way, this one is now out of stock on Costco.com. again.

           Last week, we finally received this Wahl Deluxe Haircut Kit with Trimmer and Storage Case. By the way, this set of Wahl hair clippers have been selling like hotcakes on eBay every day. 😲That's why it was very difficult to buy one at stores! You can still find electric hair clippers on Amazon and eBay though.

       This set included this storage case,  an electric hair clipper, battery detail trimmer, a lot of attachment guards, and etc.

     On the day we received this set of Wahl hair clippers, I tried to cut his hair with it at home for my first time! Now, there are so many tutorial videos on YouTube for DIY hair cut. I found that some professional hair stylists and beauticians in Japan also have uploaded those videos, and their videos are very helpful. I also watched this Japanese Philips Official video to learn how to cut hair with a hair clipper.

       Actually, it was very easy to cut his hair with the hair clipper, and I think that I did a great job. I am glad that he is very satisfied with it. (Maybe, I will sometimes cut his hair at home from now on, so I can save money on his hair. 😁) Although, I didn't cut the top of his hair this time.

The Cheapest Way to Get Passport Photos - Getting an IDP, International Driving Permit, at AAA

     As I mentioned in my previous entry, my husband and I are going to Japan this month. We are going to visit Osaka and Fukuoka. Unlike Osaka city, we will need a car in our hometown, which is the countryside in Fukuoka prefecture. Just like we did it before, we booked a rental car for this travel. Did you know that you can drive a rental car in Japan without Japanese driver's license if you have your IDP, International Driving Permit? You can check out my previous entry, Driving A Rental Car in Japan, 6 Things You Should Know Before Driving in Japan.


Getting An IDP at AAA
     Last weekend, we visited our local AAA to get an IDP, International Driving Permit. In order to get an IDP, you need to prepare two passport photos, so where do you get your passport photos?

You will need for an IDP: 
・IDP Application 
・Two original passport pictures 
・A valid U.S. driver's license 
・Pay $20USD permit fee 
・Must be used within six (6) months of desired effective date 


The Cheapest Way to Get Passport Photos
    He took his own photos using a free passport photo App (iPhone App and Android App) at home, and we uploaded the photo to Costco Photo Center. Then, we picked it up at our local Costco, and it only cost $0.17! If you are not a Costco member, you can print your photo at CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and Target for less than $0.30. :) When we needed to renew our Japanese passports, we also took passport photos using the App with my iPhone, and we picked them up at Costco. :) I cannot believe that getting an ID photo used to be more expensive ($5 to $15), but now it only costs $0.17 with using an App!

     By the way, did you know that Japan has the most powerful passports in the world? Japanese can visit 190 countries without a visa. ;)

6 Reasons Why I Like Tello Mobile - I Saved $500 A Year on Our Cell Phone Bills!

     A few years ago, I started thinking that I was paying too much on my phone plan. At that time, I was using my iPhone with Boost Mobile and was paying for $30 for 2G Unlimited Minutes. It was not too expensive, but I thought that I didn't need much data and minutes. Now, many places have free Wi-Fi such as offices, schools, Starbucks and etc, and I prefer texting over talking on the phone. I thought that I only need less data and minutes. That's why I decided to switch my phone carrier a year ago. Can you believe that my phone plan costs only $6 a month with Tello now? (I have never paid more than $10 a month on my cell phone bill since I switched to Tello about a year ago!) I still use my iPhone like I did before, but I use it with different carrier and I pay so much less on my phone plan! I decided to choose Tello because they have many positive online reviews. Before I switched to Tello, my husband was thinking about switching to Mint Mobile because he thought that he needs more gigs. However, he eventually chose Tello after me because it's incredibly cheap and I have been very satisfied with it. Surprisingly, we saved about $500 a year on our cell phone bills! I think that switching to Tell was the best decision I've ever made! Today, I'm going to share 6 reasons why I like Tello Mobile with you.

1. No Contract and No Early Termination Fee
    Now, I think that Tello is the best cell phone carrier for me, but if I find better carrier in the future, I can switch over it anytime without any fee. For instance, you can switch to Tello this month, and you can leave from Tello next month.


2. Roll Over Remaining Data and Minutes with Manual Renew
    Only if you renew your cell phone plan manually, your remaining balance will roll over. I think that it's very great because most people never use up your data and minutes every month. Now, my plan is $6 (500MB and 100 minutes), but I have enough data and minutes by renewing the plan manually. I use Reminder App on my iPhone in order not to forget phone plan renewal on time.  (When your plan is automatically renewed, unused data and minutes will be lost after 30 days. If you choose unlimited minutes, no minutes or no data, your unused minutes and data will be lost as well.) 

3. Flexible Affordable Phone Plan
     Tell has flexible phone plans, and you can choose the best plan every month. (By the way, all plans include unlimited free text.) If you have enough remaining balance, you can downgrade it. When you expect that you will need more data and minutes next month because of job hunting, moving or traveling, you can upgrade it anytime.

4. It's Sprint Network with 4G LTE!
    I live in Southern California, an area with good Sprint coverage, so I haven't had any problem with it at all. Even when I traveled Arizona, it was great in the desert too. You can check your coverage here.

5. Bring Your Own Phone
     You don't need to purchase a new smartphone nor cell phone from Tello. You can check your phone's compatibility here. For instance, if you have unlocked iPhone, you can use it with Tello. If your smartphone is locked, contact your carrier and request an unlock.


6. Great Customer Service
     You get 24/7 support from Tello. When my phone plan renewal process was taking longer on my computer, I wanted to make sure if it went well. I contacted them by live chat. They answered my question very quickly, and I was impressed at their great customer service.





How I Use Less Data on My Smartphone
     Actually, I don't really try hard to save my data, but I changed cellular setting on my iPhone to avoid unexpected cellular data usage. You can google how to reduce cellular data for more information.

1. I Watch Netflix and YouTube Videos at Home.
      I love watching Netflix and YouTube videos on my iPhone, but watching online videos uses much data. That's why I only watch them using Wi-Fi at home. I turned off cellular data for Netflix and YouTube apps on my iPhone just in case. (Setting>Cellular>Cellular Data>turn off the apps you don't want to use with cellular data.)  If you want to watch Netflix video without Wi-Fi, you can download the video using Wi-Fi in advance and watch it on your smartphone without cellular data and Wi-Fi.

 



2. Manage Background App Refresh on My Smartphone
    I allow apps to refresh on Wi-Fi only. (Setting>General>Background App Refresh>Turn on "Wi-Fi")

 Tello is good for ...

People who prefer texting over talking. (Unlimited Free Text!)

People who use less data. (If you use less than 2G data a month, I think Tello is good for you.)




      Last night, I asked my husband what is disadvantage of using Tello. He told me, "Nothing. I don't have any complaints about Tello at all. Tello is great!"  He used to listen to YouTube music video in his car (That's why he used to think he would need large data plan), but now he enjoy listening to radio or CDs during his commute.  To me, Tello is just what I was looking for. No complaints for now. :)

     Do you use any App that allows you to earn money by walking? If you get paid from walking, you want to walk more, right? Walking is obviously good for your health! :) There are many Apps that pay you to walk, and I'm using Walgreens App, Walgreens Balance Rewards for Healthy Choices.

     Last year, my husband and I started using Walgreens App to earn rewards from walking. It's called Walgreens Balance Rewards for Healthy Choices. I'm really happy that I got this App! It's very easy to earn rewards. You can earn up to 1,000 Walgreens Balance Rewards ($1 worth) per month by walking. (Actually, you don't need to walk a lot. It's very easy to earn 1,000 Balance Rewards from your daily walk.) You can also earn extra points by monitoring your weight, blood pressure and etc.

The Reason Why We Traveled in Arizona - How We Used the $250 Hilton Aspire Resort Credit

      As I mentioned in my previous entry, Starbucks Arizona Double Wall Traveler and Cold Cup, my husband and I came back from Phoenix, Arizona, last Sunday.

      He had been on his business trip in Phoenix last month. When he came back home from his business trip, I told him that I wanted to see beautiful cacti of Arizona some day again. (We had also visited Arizona in 2017. ) However, I didn't expect that we would go to Arizona so soon. Last Friday, he asked me if we could travel Phoenix for just one night. I first thought he was kidding, but we finally headed toward Phoenix last Saturday, and stayed in this hotel, Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, for one night and came back to California next day. Actually, we enjoyed a lot there. :)

      If truth be told, the reason why we traveled in Arizona was that we wanted to stay in Hilton Resort Hotel (and I wanted to see cacti in Arizona) because of Hilton Honors Aspire credit card. Last month, I had recommended him to apply American Express Hilton Honors Aspire Credit Card because I thought that it would be pretty good for us. It offers some great benefits when you stay in Hilton hotels. However, its annual fee is $450, which is very expensive for us. You know how frugal I am if you have been following my blog for years. ;) Yet, I thought that it's worth it to pay that much!

     We booked the least expensive room for $106.82, but they upgraded our room to the most expensive one which usually cost $239 when we checked in at this hotel.

      They actually forgot to give us bottles of water, but when we asked them about it, they gave us four bottles of water! ;)

     Regular check-out time is at 11 a.m., but they allowed us late check out (at 1 p.m.) for no extra charge.

     Our stay originally cost $257.67, but we received a $250 Hilton Resort Statement Credit three days after we stayed in this hotel, so it ended up being $7.67!

    If you don't travel at all, you should skip this card because its annual fee is very high. If you stay in Hilton Hotel at least a few times a year, I think that it's worth it to pay expensive annual fee.
