Fukubukuro, Japan's Lucky Shopping Bag - New Year's Japan Travel Day 9

My husband and I traveled Japan during New Year's holidays. On January 4, we had breakfast with my parents-in-law. When we were having breakfast, we watched TV news about fukubukuro (福袋), Japan's lucky New Year shopping bags filled wtih unkown products. Most Japanese department stores and retailers sell mystery bags on January 2 or so. Those are super great deals and incredibly popular in Japan. Did you know that Muji and Starbucks Japan also sell fukubukuro every New Year? Kaldi, Kitano Ace, electronic stores and some supermarkets also sell fukubukuro!
Fukubukuro

People Go Crazy About Fukubukuro Every Year!
This TV news shows that a fashion retailer at the department store in Ginza, Tokyo, sold fukubukuro for 10,800 yen each bag filled with a coat and dresses which are originally 100,000 yen in total. They were about 90% off! However, all 70 bags of the fukubukuro sold out in one minute! Many people love fukubukuro and wait in a long line for hours and hours before the store opens. (It's like US Black Friday. )

The Downside of Fukubukuro
I am not really interested in fukubukuro because you don't know what are in the bag, and I cannot stand waiting in a long line to purchase unknown products. In addition, you don't know if you can successfully purchase one after waiting for hours because they sell out very quickly.

If You Are Not Interested in Fukubukuro, When Is The Best Time of Year to Buy Clothing in Japan?
I do love Japanese bargain sale. (Unlike fukubukuro, you can try on clothing at the store before purchasing.) When I lived in Japan, I used to purchase summer clothing at department stores in August and winter clothing in January.  If you go to a department store on January 2 or 3, many of them are probably 30% off and 50% off, and they lower prices gradually until February. (You might find some 70% off sales in late January or early February.)

After having breakfast, we headed toward the airport and enjoyed Doutor Coffee there. I'll write about it next time.

Basashi, Raw Horse Meat, & Family Reunions - New Year's Japan Travel Day 8

My husband and I traveled Japan during New Year's holidays. As I mentioned in my previous entry, we purchased some tofu which was made by Otokomae Tofuten (男前豆腐店) at a supermarket nearby his parents' home. We had Otokomae tofu, and my mother-in-law served basashi (馬刺し), raw horse meat, for us.

I think eating raw horse meat is not acceptable for some other countries, but I do like basashi.:) My hometown is Kyushu, where is very famous for basashi in Japan. When my husband and I visit his parents' home, my mother-in-law always serves fresh basashi for us. I didn't use to eat basashi before because it's pretty expensive, but I really love basashi because it's so delicious! You can put soy sauce and grated ginger (or grated garlic) on it. I think you will be surprised at how delicious it is.You can check out my previous entry, Raw Horse Meat, Basashi, in Japan, which I wrote about that she took me to the famous horse butcher shop in my hometown for my first time.
Basashi (馬刺し), Raw Horse Meat
It was so delicious! :)  It was a special treat for us.

Basashi (馬刺し), Raw Horse Meat
Then, we went to my parents' home and brought sashimi, fresh raw fish, which we purchased at a supermarket, and my brother told me, "We have a special dish for you guys." I was surprised that he also served basashi for us! (Compared to my husband's family, my family usually don't eat basashi because it's pretty expensive and our family prefer sashimi rather than basashi for a special occasion.)

Hachimori (鉢盛)
My mother also served hachimori for us. My family have hachimori (鉢盛) for a special occasion. Hachi (鉢) means a large bowl. Mori (盛) means to serve in dish. In Fukuoka, a large bowl or plate with many kinds of dishes is called hachimori.

Soba Noodles
Then, my brother also served this soba noodles for us. He told me that he failed to make nitamago (煮たまご), but it was incredibly delicious. It was the best soba noodles I've ever had seriously! It was more delicious than one I had at a restaurant. I asked him how he cooked it so delicious, and he told me, "Nothing special. I just used shirodashi (白だし). That's all." I've never used shirodashi, shiradashi, before. I should have asked him the name of shirodashi he used for it. By the way, he loves traveling to enjoy the best foods all over Japan and cooks at home sometimes.

My sister gave me these beauty products, a reusable bag and snacks. She didn't know that the cleanser, Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Soap, was imported from the U.S., where I live in right now. (However, before I moved to the U.S. from Japan, I also didn't know this one is a US product, and I only knew it's a foreign brand.)
Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Soap
When I lived in Japan, I used a bar of Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Soap, but this time, it was my first time to use liquid one, and I actually really loved it. I sometimes use it to wash my face. ;) I can purchase this product at many stores in the U.S. again. :)

Next day, we flew back to the U.S. I will write about it next time.

Otokomae Tofuten, Everyone Should Try! - New Year's Japan Travel Day 8

My husband and I traveled Japan during New Year's holidays. As I mentioned in my previous entry, we went to supermarket nearby his parents' home and purchased some tofu which was made by Otokomae Tofuten (男前豆腐店).

As I mentioned in my previous entry, Otokomae Tofuten - My Favorite Japanese Tofu, I first tried their tofu in 2014 and found liking for it. Their tofu is the best tofu you can find at supermarkets!  In the U.S., I also found their tofu at Mitsuwa, a Japanese supermarket, but their tofu is six to seven times more expensive in the U.S. than one in Japan. Obviously, I cannot afford their tofu in the U.S. ;(

Anyway, when my husband and I went to supermarket in Japan, I couldn't resist buying them. :)))

Tokunou Torokeru Kenchan Premium (特濃 とろけるケンちゃんプレミアム)
I purchased Tokunou Torokeru Kenchan Premium (特濃 とろけるケンちゃんプレミアム) for 149 yen. It's extra rich silken tofu and had four pieces.
Tokunou Torokeru Kenchan Premium (特濃 とろけるケンちゃんプレミアム)

Tokunou Torokeru Kenchan Premium (特濃 とろけるケンちゃんプレミアム)
I topped it with dried bonito flakes (katsuobushi) and soy sauce. He was surprised at how rich this tofu was. :)

Okotomae Atsuage (男前厚揚)
This time, I also purchased their deep-fried tofu, Okotomae Atsuage (男前厚揚), for 149 yen. It had four blocks of atsuage tofu. There was the recipe written on the package. (Heat sesame oil in a pan, and saute atsuage tofu until it browns. Add bonito flakes, ginger and soy sauce, and stir them. Enjoy!)
Okotomae Atsuage (男前厚揚)
This one was also so delicious! My mother-in-law was impressed at this recipe. She told me, "I learned the new recipe from you! I will definitely cook these next time!" (I just cooked it as the package shows though.) Indeed, after my husband and I came back to the U.S., she told me that she cooked it several times and her husband really loves it. :)

If you live in Japan, you really should try Otokomae Tofu! You can find their tofu at some supermarkets in Japan.

Shopping at Discount Store and Supermarket - New Year's Japan Travel Day 8

My husband and I traveled Japan during New Year's holidays. As I mentioned in my previous entry, we went to a local shopping and onsen facility nearby his parents' home and purchased some local foods.

We also went to a discount store nearby his parents' home. In Japan, there are many discount store chains such as Don Quijote, Trial and Direx.

Trial Discount Store
Super Big Choco (スーパーBIGチョコ) is my favorite Japanese snack. It was only 39yen!

My husband told me that their bread was originally 69 yen but was only 34 yen because it would expire next day. (The regular price was still inexpensive!)

Japan Haul
We purchased some Japanese snacks there. You can check out my previous entry, 8 Japanese Snacks and Candies I Purchased in Japan - Japan Haul.

We also went to Japanese supermarkets to purchase my father's favorite sashimi.

Ice Manju
At the supermarket, I found that they were selling Ice Manju (あいす まんじゅう)! Ice Manju is ice cream made by Marunaga Seika (丸永製菓), which is located in Fukuoka prefecture. These used to be only available on Kyushu island, but I guess that now they sell some of their products in Tokyo as well.

We couldn't resit buying them. ;)
Yame Matcha Ice Manju
I purchased this Yame Matcha Ice Manju. It had sweetened red been paste in it. ;) It was delicious!

Hello Kitty Became A YouTuber!

Did you know that Hello Kitty started her official YouTube channel last month? I thought her voice is so cute, and she is pretty good at talking. :)  I thought that the way she talks is really like the way famous Japanese YouTubers do.

I used to think Hello Kitty is a popular character of Sanrio (サンリオ), but she says that she belongs to a talent agency (Jimusho, 事務所), Sanrio. ;D  She sometimes googles herself and knows everyone says, "She'll do anything." (She works in Sanrio Puroland every day. In addition, she works with so many companies and participates in many events. There are so many Hello Kitty products everywhere in Japan. Hello Kitty Shikansen has made its debut in Japan this year.) Everyone thinks she'll do what her talent agency (Sanrio) says, but she says that she is actually doing what she wants to do. She says, "She wants to try everything!"

Hello Kitty replies to many comments in this video.

At first, I wondered what she is aiming for..., but I really enjoyed her YouTube videos and learned more about Hello Kitty. :)

Limited Edition Momoko Sakura + Nivea Creme - Japanese Nivea Creme 50th Anniversary

Classic Nivea cream in blue tin, Nivea Creme, is the longest-selling skincare cream which was first released in Germany over 100 years ago. Nivea expanded to become a global brand, so you can find Nivea products in many countries now. In Japan, Kao, one of the largest Japanese cosmetic companies, has been selling Nivea products since 1968, so it is Nivea Creme 50th Anniversary in Japan this year!

Kao released 50th anniversary limited design Nivea Creme products on September 8. Its adorable packaging was illustrated by Momoko Sakura (さくら ももこ), the creator of Chibi Maruko-chan (ちびまるこちゃん). You probably already know that Momoko Sakura died on August 15 this year. It was very shocking new to me because I loved reading manga Chibi-Maruko-chan and watching its anime series when I was a child. I think many Japanese people also love Chibi-Maruko-chan. I was also very surprised that she had been working on Nivea Creme 50th Anniversary project.

Japanese Breads Haul - 7-Eleven Convenience Store in Japan

As I mentioned in my previous entry, my husband was on his business trip in Tokyo early this month. Before he went to Tokyo, I asked him to purchase some Japanese bread like always I do. ;) Today, I'm going to share Japanese bread he purchased at 7-Eleven convenience store with you.

You can also check out my previous entry related to Japanese convenience store bread.
■Japanese Breads Haul - Convenience Stores in Japan

1. Seven Gold Bread, Thick Sliced Bread (金の食パン)
127 yen each at 7-Eleven in Japan
Seven Gold Bread, Thick Sliced Bread (金の食パン)
I really love Japanese thick sliced bread. As you can see the photo below, Japanese sliced breads are very thick. He tried to find the thickest ones for me. :)
Seven Gold Bread, Thick Sliced Bread (金の食パン)

I toasted it with my Japanese water toaster oven, Sharp Healsio Gurie. It turned out so delicious! :) It was crisp outside and soft and fluffy inside.
By the way, if you live in Japan, I also recommend you to make a toast with your fish grill. Most Japanese gas stoves include a fish grill. Pour some water in the grill tray and grill the bread just like you grill fish in it. (I guess that some of my readers live in Japan, right?) Most Japanese people don't grill sliced bread with a fish grill, but try it. You will be surprised at how perfect your toast is! I learned this fish grill hack through Japanese TV show and Japanese magazine when I lived in Japan.

2. Raisin Rolls with Margarine (レーズン バターロール マーガリン入り)
116 yen for four rolls at 7-Eleven Convenience Store in Japan

Japan Haul - 6 Best Japanese Products I Purchased on Amazon Japan

As I mentioned in my previous entry, my husband came back from Japan a week ago. He was on his business trip in Tokyo, Japan for two days (That's only one night!). A week before he flew to Tokyo from Los Angeles, I ordered some products on Amazon Japan. Then, he picked up my items at a convenience store nearby his hotel in Japan. Amazon Japan convenience store pickup is so convenient for us since we don't live in Japan now.        When we visit Japan, we usually purchase many items from Amazon Japan. However, I didn't order a lot this time. It's because he will go to Japan next month as well. ;) I'll order some more products again next month. Anyway, today I'm going to share six products I ordered on Amazon Japan with you. :)

1. Rohto Obagi Vitamin C Serum C10 (ロート オバジ C10 セラム)
Beauty Serum
12 ml for 3,637 yen
Can be also purchased at many drugstores in Japan
Rohto Obagi Vitamin C Serum C10 (ロート オバジ C10 セラム)
As I mentioned in my previous entry, Rohto Obagi Vitamin C Serum - Japanese Beauty Serum Loved by Foreign Tourists, Obagi Vitamin C Serum is popular beauty serum from Rohto (ロート), which is a Japanese company makes eye drops, skincare products and so on. Obagi Vitamin C Serum has won many beauty awards in Japan. Many Japanese people review that it minimizes skin pores and evens skin tone. Especially, it works for acne scars and enlarged facial pores in aging.

2. Shumitekuto Toothbrushes (シュミテクト 歯ブラシ)
4 Toothbrushes for 723 yen
Can be also purchased at most drugstores in Japan
Shumitekuto Toothbrushes (シュミテクト 歯ブラシ)
I love Japanese compact toothbrushes! I'm currently using Lion Systema Compact Head Toothbrush (システマ 超極細毛), which I also love, but this time, I purchased Shumitekuto Toothbrushes (シュミテクト).
Shumitekuto Toothbrushes (シュミテクト 歯ブラシ)
I use Japanese compact toothbrush to remove plaque between gum and teeth, and it works great for me. I believe that using only Japanese toothbrush is not enough, so I use it after using Sonic Care toothbrush, Reach toothbrush and regular floss.
Shumitekuto Toothbrushes (シュミテクト 歯ブラシ)
As you can see the photo below, bristles of these toothbrushes are extremely thin, so the bristles can reach deep between gum and teeth. :)

3. Elis Megami Extra Slim 320 for Heavy Night (エリス Megami 素肌のきもち 超スリム320 羽根つき 特に多い夜用)
Sanitary Pads for Heavy Night

Can be also purchased at many drugstores in Japan
Elis Megami Extra Slim 320 for Heavy Night (エリス Megami 素肌のきもち 超スリム320 羽根つき 特に多い夜用)
Japanese sanitary pads are very well made and also very popular for Asian foreign tourists. Last time I visited in Japan, I saw many Asian women bought up a lot of them in a drugstore in Tokyo (Each woman was buying more than 10 to 20 packages of sanitary pads at a time!).  Even when I have a heavy period, I don't feel wet with wearing a Japanese pad because it instantly absorbs blood and stays dry. In addition, Japanese sanitary pads are very affordable, so if you are planning on visiting Japan, you really should try one!
Elis Megami Extra Slim 320 for Heavy Night (エリス Megami 素肌のきもち 超スリム320 羽根つき 特に多い夜用)
This time, I purchased Elis Megami Extra Slim 320. According to the package, this sanitary pad won Biteki Reader's Best Cosmetic Award of 2017. By the way, Biteki (美的) is popular Japanese beauty magazine.

Sara.li.e (サラサーティ さらりえ)
I also purchased Sara.li.e Pantyliners (サラサーティ さらりえ). Japanese pads and pantyliners never irritate my skin. This one was also very affordable. :)

5. Marna Kitchen Brush for Bento Box (マーナ お弁当箱洗いブラシ)
Cleaning Brush for Bento Box
173 yen
Can be possibly found at Tokyu Hands and Loft in Japan
Marna Kitchen Brush for Bento Box (マーナ お弁当箱洗いブラシ)
As I mentioned in my previous entry, I really love Marna Bento Box Brush! About 10 years ago, I purchased one at Francfranc in Japan because it was so adorable. Since then, I've been using it almost every day. It's a brush for a bento box, but I use it to wash dirty dishes and pans. It also help me to wash a fine strainer and tumbler lids perfectly. Seriously, I cannot live without it! :)
Marna Kitchen Brush for Bento Box (マーナ お弁当箱洗いブラシ)
It's just a brush but is very well made. The firmness of the bristles is perfect, and it lasts years and years! The only downside is that it's very hard to find one in-store in Japan now. Last time I visited Tokyo, I checked Tokyu Hands, Loft and Francfranc, but I couldn't find one. That's why when I found that it was on sale (Add-On Item) on Amazon Japan, I couldn't resist buying an extra one. ;) It was only 173 yen with purchasing 2,000 yen more products!

This dish washing sponge is also my favorite Marna product. :) Marna Osakana Sponge is their best selling product. I love their long one. It's easier to wash tall glass and large tumblers.
