Desert Hills Premium Outlets Haul

Last Saturday, my husband and I went to Desert Hills Premium Outlets. We arrived at the parking lot at 4:30 p.m. and enjoyed shopping there until 10 p.m. Because it was the last weekend before Christmas, many retailers were offering big holiday sales. Today, I'm going to share what I purchased at Desert Hills Premium Outlet with you.

Kate Spade New York
Kate Spade Small Shawn WLRU 5243 Larchmont Avenue Black
I have been using my favorite large Kate Spade wallet, which I purchased six years ago. It still looks as good as very new somehow, and I will continue to use it next several years. However, I was looking for a medium size wallet which I can fit in my small crossbody bag. I finally found this this black wallet at Kate Spade New York. It was originally $99 but was on sale for $21.60!

It has a zipper coin pocket, bill slot and card slots.

At Kate Spade, all handbags and wallets were 70% off plus 20% off. (It means that you would get a total of 76% discount.)
This year, I have also enjoyed shopping Kate Spade product online, surprise.katespade.com. I had purchased a handbag last month. :)

Tory Burch
Tory Burch Mini Perfume Set
At Tory Burch, most their products were 50% off. I purchased this set of three kinds of Tory Burch mini perfume (Tory Burch Eau De Parfum, Love Relentlessly Eau De Parfum and Bel Azur Eau De Parfum). It was originally $42 but was on sale for $21!

Banana Republic Factory
Banana Republic Twist-Front Top
I love Banana Republic clothing. At the store, there was no waiting line for the fitting room, so I tried on some articles of clothing. :) This Banana Republic short sleeve top was originally $54.99 but was on sale for $8.79. Because I signed up Bright Rewards at the store, I got additional 25% discount, so it turned out $6.59. I paid it with a Banana Republic gift card which I purchased 20% off years ago. It ended up being $5.20!

Banana Republic Plaid Knit Top
I also purchased this Banana Republic plaid knit top. It was originally $44.99 but was on sale for $7.59. After Bright Reward signed up discount, it turned out $5.69. It ended up being $4.55 with the gift card deal.

Calvin Klein
Calvin Klein Bartley Micro Texture Sling Backpack
At Calvin Klein, all bags were 50% off, and scarves were 70% off. My husband was looking for a new sling bag, and he purchased this Calvin Klein bag. It was originally $119.50 but was on sale for $59.75. He used a 15% off coupon, so it ended up being $50.78!

Using A Smartphone While Driving Is Illegal in Japan

In my previous entry, I wrote about how hard it is to get a Japanese driver's license. In Japan, getting a driver's license costs a lot of money. It usually costs around 200,000 yen, which is equivalent to about $2,000, and you need to go to a driving school, take so many classes and must pass some examinations. I also wrote The Reason Why Driving in Japan Is Not Easy and 6 Things You Should Know Before Driving in Japan.

6 Things You Should Know Before Driving in Japan
1. Japan uses kilometers. (Japan does not use miles.)

2. You must drive on the left side of the road in Japan.

3. Japanese cars have the driver's seat and steering wheel on their right side.

4. You and all passengers must wear a seat belt.

5. Drinking and driving is illegal. (A drunk driver must pay a fine up to 1,000,000 yen, which is equivalent to about $10,000, or serve up to 5 year of in jail. Passengers must pay a fine up to 500,000 yen or serve up to 3 year of in jail.)

6. Highway is not free. It costs a lot to drive on. (That's why the highway is clean and well maintained in Japan.)

Using A Smartphone While Driving Is Illegal in Japan.
The Picture Is from the Official Site of the Public Relations Office of the Government of Japan
Using a smartphone while driving is illegal in Japan. On December 1, Japan tightened regulations on smartphone, mobile phone, and GPS use while driving.

・Do not use a smartphone or mobile phone while driving.
・Do not talk on the phone (smartphone/mobile phone) while driving.
・Do not text while driving.
・Do not watch a smartphone/mobile phone carefully while driving.
・Do not watch a GPS carefully while driving.

You should never touch your phone nor GPS while driving. I believe that you may use a GPS, but do not watch it for 2 seconds or more while driving.

■ If you use or watch your smartphone, you must pay a fine of up to 100,000 yen (about $1,000) or serve up to 6 months of in jail.
Large Vehicle : A Fine of 25,000 yen
  Ordinary-Sized Vehicle: A Fine of 18,000 yen

■ If you used or watched your smartphone and caused an accident, you will get your driver's license suspended. In addition, you must pay a fine of up to 300,000 yen (about $3,000) or serve up to 1 year of in jail.

If you want to use your smartphone, you should find a parking space. If you park your car and turn off the engine, you can use your smartphone in your car.

If you understand Japanese, you can watch this Japanese news below. According to FNN news, it's illegal to watch a GPS for 2 seconds or more while driving, but it's not illegal to use a phone at red light.

The Cheapest Way to Get Passport Photos - Getting an IDP, International Driving Permit, at AAA

AAA
As I mentioned in my previous entry, my husband and I are going to Japan this month. We are going to visit Osaka and Fukuoka. Unlike Osaka city, we will need a car in our hometown, which is the countryside in Fukuoka prefecture. Just like we did it before, we booked a rental car for this travel. Did you know that you can drive a rental car in Japan without Japanese driver's license if you have your IDP, International Driving Permit? You can check out my previous entry, Driving A Rental Car in Japan, 6 Things You Should Know Before Driving in Japan.

Getting An IDP at AAA
Last weekend, we visited our local AAA to get an IDP, International Driving Permit. In order to get an IDP, you need to prepare two passport photos, so where do you get your passport photos?

You will need for an IDP:
・IDP Application
・Two original passport pictures
・A valid U.S. driver's license
・Pay $20USD permit fee
・Must be used within six (6) months of desired effective date

The Cheapest Way to Get Passport Photos
He took his own photos using a free passport photo App (iPhone App and Android App) at home, and we uploaded the photo to Costco Photo Center. Then, we picked it up at our local Costco, and it only cost $0.17! If you are not a Costco member, you can print your photo at CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and Target for less than $0.30. :) When we needed to renew our Japanese passports, we also took passport photos using the App with my iPhone, and we picked them up at Costco. :) I cannot believe that getting an ID photo used to be more expensive ($5 to $15), but now it only costs $0.17 with using an App!
By the way, did you know that Japan has the most powerful passports in the world? Japanese can visit 190 countries without a visa. ;)

Next time, I will write about a Japanese traffic law.

My Shopping List for Japanese Groceries - What I Want to Get in Japan

This month, my husband and I are finally going to visit Japan. While staying in Japan, we would like to purchase some Japanese products. You can check my previous entry, My Shopping List for Japanese Beauty Products - What I Want to Get in Japan. Also, we would like to purchase some Japanese groceries and will go to supermarkets, convenience stores, drugstores, department stores (depachika), souvenir stores, Kitano Ace and Costco.

Yes, we are planing on shopping at Costco in Japan! It's been over five years since I went to Costco Japan last time! I really miss high quality sushi selling at Japanese Costco. :) That being said I still haven't decided what I will purchase at Costco in Japan. They have many Japanese products which you have never seen at Costco in the U.S. Did you know that if you are a Costco member, you'll have access to any Costco location in the world? Just keep in mind that Costco Japan only accepts MasterCard credit cards and cash while Costco in the U.S. accepts Visa credit cards and cash.

I'm also looking forward to shopping at Kitano Ace (北野エース)! If you are already an expert at Japanese foods and would like to find something you don't see at regular supermarkets in Japan, I think you will love Kitano Ace.

This time, we are going to Osaka and Fukuoka, so we will purchase some delicious souvenirs which you can only purchase locally. Our hometown is Fukuoka, and we lived in Osaka for many years. That's why we know the best local foods there. ;)

Anyway, today, I'm going to share with you my shopping list for Japanese groceries. These products listed below can be purchased at supermarkets, Kitano Ace and souvenir stores in Japan.

■Supermarket

Instant Miso Soup (インスタント味噌汁)
In Japan, there are so many companies making delicious instant miso soup such as Marukome (マルコメ) and Nagatanien (永谷園). I haven't still decided which instant soup we will buy. You can find instant miso soup at supermarkets, convenience stores, Donki and so on. Maybe, I will also check instant miso soup at Costco.
Marukome Instant Miso Soup (マルコメ 料亭の味)

Furikake, Rice Seasoning (ふりかけ)
If you love furikake (ふりかけ), Japanese rice seasoning, I recommend you to try Otona no Furikake (おとなのふりかけ). You can sprinkle rice seasoning like Otona no Furikake over steamed rice. This time, I want to purchase rice ball seasoning such as Yukari (ゆかり) and Wakame (炊込みわかめ). You can mix rice ball seasoning with steamed rice. I made wakame rice balls for my road trip before.
Otona no Furikake (永谷園 おとなのふりかけ)

Mishima Yukari, Shiso Leaf Rice Seasoning (三島 ゆかり)

Mishima Wakame, Seaweed Rice Seasoning (三島 炊込みわかめ)

Fukujinzuke, Japanese Radish Pickles for Curry Rice (福神漬)
Fukujinzuke is perfect with Japanese curry. If you go to CoCo Ichiban Curry Restaurant, you can also find Coco Ichiban Fukujinzuke. I haven't still decided which fukujinzuke I will purchase though. You can find fukujinzuke at supermarkets. Usually, fukuzinzuke is red, but you can also find brown ones.
Fukujinzuke (福神漬)

Takanazuke, Japanese Mustard Leaf Pickles (たかな漬/高菜漬)
In Fukuoka, takanazuke is famous local pickles and also popular tonkotsu ramen topping. You can also check my previous entry, How to Prepare Takanazuke, Japanese Mustard Leaf Pickles.
Takanazuke (高菜漬)

Japanese Snacks and Candies
I also want to purchase some Japanese snacks and candies. One of my favorite Japanese snacks is Calbee Jagariko, which is crunchy potato stick snacks. I also love Umaibo, which has so many positive reviews on Amazon US. I also love Riska Chocobo!

Calbee Jagariko Cheese (カルビー じゃがりこ チーズ)

Yaokin Umaibo (やおきん うまい棒)

Riska Chocobo (リスカ チョコ棒)

Japanese Bread
I really love freshly baked Japanese bread Japanese bakeries sell, and I also love commercial bread selling at supermarkets and convenience stores. They are nice and fluffy. I would like to purchase shokupan (食パン), Japanese sliced bread, in Japan and will make my favorite egg toast in the U.S. :)
Japanese Bread

How to Make Egg Toast

■Kitano Ace (北野エース)
I really love Kitano Ace. They have unique and best groceries!

Ago Iri Dashi, Japanese Soup Stock with Flying Fish (あご入りだし)
Ago dashi, agodashi (あごだし) is fish based broth made from dried flying fish. As I mentioned in my previous entry, Shopping at Don Quijote Ginza and Japanese Vending Machines, agodashi has been very popular in Japan these years. People in Japan use agodashi for making miso soup, udon soup, ramen soup and etc. You can check out my previous entry, Japanese Grocery Haul - 7 Products He Purchased at Kitano Ace in Japan.
Kitano Ace Agoiri Dashi (北野エース あご入りだし)

Kyushu Sweet Potato Chips, Kyushu Satsuma Chips (九州さつまチップス)
Kitano Ace Kyushu Satsuma Chips (北野エース 九州さつまチップス)
This is my most favorite snacks from Kitano Ace. The chips are sweet and so crunchy!

■Souvenir Stores (Osaka and Fukuoka)
There are souvenir stores in sightseeing areas, highway service areas train stations and airports.

Takoyaki Manjyu (たこ焼き まんじゅう)
As I mentioned in my previous entry, Top 3 My Favorite Delicious Souvenirs from Osaka , I love Takoyaki Manjyu! This takoyaki manjyu doesn't taste like takoyaki obviously, but it's pretty and round like takoyaki. Each manjyu has a cute octopus face. :) There are two kinds of takoyaki manjyu. One of them has sweeten red bean paste in it, and the other has cream in it.
Takoyaki Manjyu (たこ焼き まんじゅう)

Hakata Torimon (博多通りもん)
As I mentioned in my previous entry, 5 Best Delicious Souvenirs from Fukuoka, Hakata Torimon (博多 通りもん) is always very popular and can be only purchased in Fukuoka. It has gotten the gold award of Monde Selection 18 years in a row. Hakata Torimon is manju (饅頭), a traditional Japanese confection, with a filling of delicious white bean paste. Even if you don't like traditional Japanese manju, I think that you will like it. I think most people love it regardless of age and race. Did you know that Hakata Torimon has earned a Guinness World Record for having the most annual sales in a new category dedicated to a bean paste bun? I really love Hakata Torimon. :)

My Shopping List for Japanese Beauty Products - What I Want to Get in Japan

This month, my husband and I are finally going to visit Japan. While staying in Japan, I would like to purchase many Japanese products like always we did in previous years. You can check out what we purchased in Japan from my Japan Haul entries.

I just listed these beauty products I really want to purchase in Japan. Some of them are my all-time favorite products, and some of them are the products I've shared with you in my Best Japanese Beauty Product entries. If you are planning on visiting Japan and have no idea what you should get there, I recommend you to try these products I listed below. :)

Makeup Remover : When I visited Japan last time, I purchased Bifesta Cleansing Sheet Bright Up, Japanese makeup removing wipes, at Donki, a Japanese discount store, and I really loved it! I was impressed that it removed makeup and moisturized my skin at the same time. I will definitely purchase one again, and I will use it while staying in Japan because makeup removing wipes are really convenient for travel. :) I am also interested in Chifure Washable Cold Cream because it's very popular in Japan now. However, I heard that Chifure one is difficult to find at stores now because it's explosively popular.

Facial Cleanser : Currently, I'm using my homemade soap to wash my face everyday. It's very gentle to my skin and is the best soap I've ever used. That's why, this time, I just want to purchase enzyme powder cleanser for deep cleansing. Fancl Deep Clear Washing Powder have won many beauty awards in Japan this year, so I really want to try one. :)

Keshosui, Japanese Moisturizing Lotion : I've been using Muji Light Toning Water for many years. It hydrates my skin very well and is very affordable in Japan. Indeed, Muji Light Toning Water is about three times more expensive in the U.S. than ones in Japan. I cannot wait to go shopping at Muji in Japan. If you are new to Muji, you can also check out my previous Muji entries. :)

Sunscreens : I've tried many sunscreens in the U.S., but I couldn't find better sunscreen here than ones Japan has. I usually wear Japanese sunscreen with SPF around 30 because SPF30 is effective enough for daily use and is more gentle than high SPF sunscreen. That's why I want to purchase Nivea Sun Water Gel SPF35 for daily use. I also want to purchase a sunscreen with SPF50+ for long hours outdoor activities such as hiking. I love Kanebo Allie sunscreen.

Face Mask : This time, I want to purchase many facial sheet masks in Japan. When I visited Japan last time, I purchased very popular Keana Nadeshiko Rice Mask and really loved it. Although it was very hard to find one back then because it's in high demand. I hope it's easier to find ones now but this year, Keana Nadeshiko Rice Mask has also won many beauty awards in Japan. It's still very popular now.  I also love Saborino morning face mask and want to purchase one (maybe premium one or red/pink one). In addition, I also purchase some other new face masks in Japan.

Toothbrushes : I really love Japanese compact toothbrushes such as Systema Toothbrushes and Shumitekuto Toothbrushes because bristles of these toothbrushes are extremely thin, so the bristles can reach deep between gum and teeth. :) My Korean friend's family loves Systema toothbrushes. A few years ago, I gave some Systema toothbrushes for my friend's family, and they fell in love with Systema ones. She asked me if I could purchase more toothbrushes for them when I or my husband have a chance to go to Japan, so I will purchase some for her family. ;)  Last time, I purchase Shumitekuto toothbrushes for myself and I really love them as mush as I love Systema toothbrushes.

Japanese Sanitary Pads and Pantyliners : Japanese sanitary pads are very well made and also very popular for Asian foreign tourists. Last time I visited Japan, I saw many Asian women bought up a lot of them in a drugstore in Tokyo (Each woman was buying more than 10 to 20 packages of sanitary pads at a time!).  Even when I have a heavy period, I don't feel wet with wearing a Japanese pad because it instantly absorbs blood and stays dry. Japanese paper products are always very affordable and very popular for foreign tourists such as baby diapers, facial tissue and sanitary pads. I will purchase some sanitary pads and pantyliners in Japan. You can purchase these at most drugstores in Japan, but I will probably purchase them on Amazon Japan because I guess they are cheaper than ones selling at most stores just like before.
