Ogi Yokan, Traditional Japanese Sweets in Saga Prefecture

     As I mentioned in my previous entry, my husband and I received a package which my mother-in-law sent from Japan. There was Ogi Yokan (小城羊羹) in it. Yokan is a thick, jellied dessert made of red bean paste, sugar and etc. Ogi (小城) is the most famous city for traditional yokan manufacture in Japan. The city is located in Saga prefecture, so if you visit Kyusyu (九州), Japan, you can find Ogi Yokan (小城羊羹) at most souvenir shops there. For instance, you can find it at gift shops in Fukuoka airport. :)

      Traditional Ogi yokan is very unique because the surface of yokan is dry and hard.

      See? Outside of yokan is dry and hard, and inside of it is moist and soft.

     When you have Ogi yokan, you can enjoy two different textures.

     When he was a teen, he had a part time job at souvenir shop in Fukuoka for a few years. If truth be told, I also worked there for only weeks at the same time. ;)  One of the best selling souvenir there was Ogi yokan.  At that time, I sometimes saw that customers asking him which Ogi yokan was the best. When I eat Ogi yokan, it always reminds me of our good old days. :) At that time, I never expected that we would be married, live in the U.S. and eat Ogi yokan. You never know what is going to happen in your life. ;)
