Most Popular Japanese Foods (Top 41 - 50)

      As I mentioned in my previous entry, one of Japanese TV show introduced top 50 popular Japanese foods which were chosen by foreign people this year. In my previous blog entries, I've shared top 40 most popular Japanese foods through my blog so far. Today, I'm going to share most popular Japanese foods (top 41-50) with you. :) If you are going to travel Japan, you should try these authentic Japanese foods there.

No.41 Korokke (コロッケ)
      Korokke is a popular Japanese deep-fried dish and mainly made of potato and other ingredients. You can find ones at any supermarkets in Japan. Probably, you can also find them at butcher shops.

No.42 Japanese Vegetables (野菜)
      Japan has unique vegetables such as Japanese radishes, Japanese eggplants, shiso leaves and mizuna. While traveling Japan, you might find so many vegetables you have never seen before. :)

No.43 Potato Salad (ポテトサラダ)
        Japanese potato salad contains of mashed potatoes, mayonnaise, ham and some vegetables such as sliced cucumbers and finely chopped onions. Potato salad is usually served as side dishes, and it is also used for sandwiches.

No.44 Tofu (豆腐)
      Tofu is well known as healthy foods. As you might know, tofu is made of soy beans and is rich in protein. Japan has many tofu dishes such as hiyayakko, agedashi tofu, okara, tofu donuts and so on. A number of tofu stores has been decreasing in Japan, but you can still find traditional tofu stores and taste very fresh delicious tofu.

No. 45 Chawanmushi (茶碗蒸し)
       Chawanmushi is an egg custard dish in Japan. It's usually made of egg, some vegetables, chicken, soy sauce and dashi. It's served as side dish. My mother used to make chawanmushi for dinner, and I loved it. You can find chawanmushi at some traditional Japanese restaurants.

No.46 Menchi-Katsu (メンチカツ)
        Menchi-Katsu is deep-fried ground meat cutlet. You can find it at teishoku restaurants and tonkatsu restaurants in Japan. You might be able to find it at butcher shops there. When I was living in Osaka, I loved menchi-katsu at a small deef-fried dish shop, Nakamuraya. They sell freshly deep-fried menchi-katsu, korokke, karaage and so on at very reasonable prices.

No.47 Somen (そうめん、素麺)
     Somen is very thin Japanese noodle made of wheat flour. It's usually served cold and mostly eaten during summer. If you go to Japan in summer, you can also try nagashi-somen. Nagashi-somen is the noodles flow with water in long bamboo. In order to have nagashi-somen, you need to catch flowing noodles with chopsticks.

No.48 Natto (納豆)
     Natto is a traditional Japanese food made of fermented soy beans. It is very popular dish for breakfast in Japan. Some people don't like it because it's slimy texture and strong smell, but to me it's delicious, and I can eat every day. :) You can find natto at any supermarkets in Japan. If you are new to natto, I recommend you to try Kin-no-tsubu Niowanatto(金のつぶ におわなっとう), which has less natto smell. :)

No. 49 Monjayaki (もんじゃ焼き)
     Monjayaki is similar to okonomiyaki, but it's made of a dough more liquid than okonomiyaki. It's more often eaten in Kanto region, so I have had monjyayaki just a few times in my life since I used to live in Kyusyu and Kansai in Japan. If you go to Tokyo, you should try monjayaki there.

No.50 Wagashi (和菓子)
      Wagashi is a traditional Japanese sweet. It's usually made of sweet red bean pastes and mochi. It is usually served with green tea such as matcha. You can find many wagashi stores in Japan.
