How We Renovated Our Bathroom on A Budget - Tile Vanity Top, Sink, Faucet and Mirror Frame (2018)

As you can see the photo below, this bathroom had the old pink beige tiles before. It looked very outdated, and I didn't like the tiles very much. Now, the bathroom has clean and modern look. It wasn't easy to replace floor tiles, but I am glad that we finally did it. Today, I'm going to share with you installing the bathroom floor tiles.

Preparing Underlayment
After removing the old tiles and toilet, he leveled concrete floor and installed Schluter Systems Ditra Orange Plastic Waterproofing Tile Membrane.

Shopping Bathroom Floor Tiles
First, we went to our local Lowe's. We looked for porcelain tiles because they are denser, harder and more durable than ceramic. We also looked for matte finish to prevent slipping on wet flooring.
I thought these black and white tiles are very stylish, but they are ceramic.

We were looking for natural stone look tiles.

We decided to purchase these grey Della Torre tiles for our master bathroom. However, after laying them on the floor, we thought that these were too dark. :( We realized that we love brighter look. Again, taking a lot of heavy and fragile tiles to our home was very hard, but we returned all of them and decided to look for different tiles. (I made the same mistake for our guest bathroom renovation...)

Installing Tiles
We finally purchased the white calacatta porcelain tiles at Home Depot. I thought these were perfect! They look similar to our guest bathroom flooring but they are slightly different. :) He finally installed these tiles in our bathroom!

For the grout, he used grey Fusion Pro Single Component Grout.

I really love this bathroom floor. It has elegant and modern look. I love that it's very easy to clean and maintain. :)

Next time, I'll write about toilet, paint, lighting medicine cabinet, window treatment and towel bars.

We Finally Installed Laminate Flooring in Our Master Bedroom!

It has been a while since I shared my home renovation project with you through my blog last time. My husband and I have worked on our home renovation on weekends since we purchased our home in 2016. I cannot believe that we have been doing it for two years! We almost finished our master bathroom renovation in June this year. (You know, the bathroom renovation takes so long. When we completely finish it, I will share it with you.) This June, we started installing laminate flooring in our master bedroom.
Originally, when we purchased our home, it had ugly old wall-to-wall carpets in an entire home except for kitchen and bathrooms. As I mentioned in my previous entry, we removed the wall-to-wall carpet in our master bedroom and were going to install laminate flooring two years ago, but we changed our renovation plan. We decided to work on other rooms first. You can check out what we did for the first year from my previous entry, It's Been A Year! - We've Done 17 Our Home Renovation Projects.

Removing Old Wall-to-Wall Carpets

Two years ago, we removed the ugly wall-to-wall carpet in this room and got rid of dust. (We eventually used this room as a huge storage room for a lot of renovation materials until last month.)
A lot of dust!

Installing New Underlayment and Laminate Flooring

Installing new laminate flooring was pretty easy for us because we did it in our second bedroom before. We installed the underlayment, Pergo Gold Premium 3mm Flooring Underlayment. Then, we finally started laying laminate flooring, Camden Oak Laminate Flooring with Pad Attached, which we purchased at our local Costco.

Installing Baseboard Molding
We purchased baseboard molding at our local Home Depot.
Then, he nailed baseboard molding into the place with the nail gun. Then, he used caulk to fill the gaps between the walls and molding.

We also painted white on entire walls and baseboard molding, and this room looks so fresh now.

This ugly room turned into a brand new room. :)

By the way, we decided to use our master bedroom as our home office. :) I'll write about the painting and other updates of this room next time. :)

Before and After - Entryway and Living Room Flooring (Porcelain Tiles and Luxury Vinyl Planks)

As I mentioned in my previous entry, my husband and I worked on flooring renovation last month. We finally finished replacing old wall-to-wall carpet to new flooring in our entryway and living room. :)

Entryway Flooring
Originally, when we purchased our home, it had ugly old wall-to-wall carpets in an entire home except for kitchen and bathrooms.  Because we are Japanese, we take off and put on shoes in an entryway. That's why we wanted to create a transition from outside the home to in. We decided to install new tiles which are durable and easier to clean.

We went to our local Lowe's to purchase porcelain tiles, which are more durable than ceramic.

From our home, I brought a piece of vinyl plank sample which we would install in our home in order to choose tiles easier.

We finally chose Del Conca Roman Stone Beige Porcelain Tile, which was designed and made in Italy.

He removed the ugly old carpet and got rid of the dust.

Then he installed the tile underlayment, Schluter Systems Ditra Orange Plastic Waterproofing Tile Membrane.

Then, he installed the beige porcelain tiles.

It's a small entryway, but it's perfect enough for our small home. We can take off shoes here. We are really satisfied with our new entryway. :)  We placed a shoe storage here, and I will share the complete look with you after I finish decorating around this entryway. :)

Living Room Flooring
We wanted to replace old wall-to-wall carpet to new luxury vinyl planks in our living room just like we did in our hallway.   He also removed old carpet in our living room and found that there were some cracks in concrete subfloor. He repaired them before installing the underlayment, which reduces walking noise and keeps floors feeling warm.

The luxury vinyl planks are the same products we had installed in our hallway.

Finally, we finished installing luxury vinyl planks in our living room!

Last week, we finally placed the Christmas tree in our new living room! As I mentioned in my previous year's entry, we had needed to place it in our second bedroom last year because we hadn't had enough space to place it in our living room at that time. We were glad that we could finish our flooring project for our living room before this Christmas.

I decorated this beautiful dove ornament which we purchased at Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe last winter.

We were sometimes surprised at how much our home has improved by looking back the first photo. :)
