How to Purchase Japanese Affordable Eyeglasses at Zoff

Zoff

As I mentioned in my previous entry, Must Go to Place in Japan - Affordable Eyeglass Stores, JINS and Zoff, if you wear eyeglasses and are planing on going to Japan, you should go to eyeglass stores in Japan. It's because many stores sell very affordable stylish eyeglasses in Japan. Unlike the U.S., buying eyeglasses doesn't need prescriptions in Japan, so you don't need to see an ophthalmologist nor an optometrist to make new eyeglasses there. If you want to try affordable ones, I recommend you to check JINS and Zoff, which have so many branches in Japan.

About five years ago, he purchased two pairs of eyeglasses at JINS. You can check out my previous entry, How to Purchase Japanese Affordable Eyeglasses at JINS. This time, we decided to go to Zoff to purchase his new eyeglasses because one of Zoff branches is located in Alpa, the shopping mall connected to the hotel we stayed, so it was very convenient location for us. Zoff has 237 branches in Japan. In Tokyo, there are 58 Zoff branches, so if you are in Tokyo, it's pretty easy to find Zoff.

How to Purchase Eyeglasses at Zoff

Zoff

1. Choose your favorite eyeglass frame.

There are many eyeglasses you can choose from.  The prices of most eyeglasses are 5,500 yen, 8,800 yen, 11,100 yen, and 13,300 yen.

2. Take the frame to the register.

A staff asks you about the lenses. There is no charge for regular lenses and blue cut lenses. If you want special lenses such as lenses with UV protection, there is an additional charge.

3. Take an eye exam in order to make the accurate lenses.

They don't charge eye exam fee.

Zoff

When we were at Zoff, an Asian foreign customer was taking eye exam. One of Japanese staffs was trying to speak English for the foreign customer.  If you only speak English, I think that they will be able to help you at some branches.

4.  Make a payment.

・ You can pay with cash or credit cards at Zoff.

・They offer Tax Free Service (10% off) for tourists. You need to show your passport with a valid entry stamp at the store where you want to apply for a tax refund.

When my husband purchased eyeglasses at Zoff, they were offering a trade-in promotion, which was that when you dropped off your old eyeglasses at Zoff, you got a 550 yen discount for your new eyeglass purchase.  He was able to purchase two pairs of eyeglasses for 9,500 yen (5,500 yen + 5,500 yen - 550 yen trade-in discount - 950 yen tax free discount), which was equivalent to $67.38.

5. Wait until your eyeglasses are ready.

It usually takes for 30 minutes. If there is no stock in the store, you need to wait for several days.

The staff told him that his new eyeglasses would be ready in 30 minutes. Meanwhile, we enjoyed shopping and having lunch at Alpa shopping mall.

6. Pick up your eyeglasses.

The staff will adjust your eyeglass arms for you. You can receive your new eyeglasses, an eyeglass case and a lens cleaning cloth.

When we arrived at Zoff for pickup, he dropped off his old eyeglasses he was wearing because he got a trade-in discount. The staff adjusted his new eyeglass arms. There were some eyeglass cases he could choose from. He ended up choosing these black eyeglass cases.

Zoff Eyeglass Cases

He also received these Zoff lens cleaning clothes.

His New Eyeglasses
These pairs of eyeglasses look pretty alike but are slightly different.

His New Eyeglasses

His New Eyeglasses
He is really satisfied with his purchase. 😊 I know that eyeglasses are very affordable in Japan, but we were really surprised that his new two pairs of eyeglasses were $67.38! (One pair of eyeglasses only cost $33.69!) When we were in Japan, Japanese yen price was pretty low (1 USD was 141 yen at that time.), so everything we saw in Japan looked an incredible bargain to us.

Hotel Room Tour and Review - Sunshine City Prince Hotel - Ikebukuro, Tokyo

Sunshine City Prince Hotel in Ikebukuro, Tokyo

In November, 2022, my husband and I visited Tokyo. This time, we were planing on having a complete medical checkup, a preventive medical checkup, in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. In Japan, a complete medical checkup is called ningen doc, ningen dock (人間ドック). In 2017, we had ningen doc at a hospital located in Ikebukuro, so we decided to go to the same hospital this time. We ended up choosing this hotel, Sunshine City Prince Hotel, because it pretty closes to the hospital we would go to, and it's very convenient location for shopping and dining.

3 Chome-1-5 Higashiikebukuro
Toshima-ku, Tokyo 170-8440, Japan

Sunshine City Prince Hotel has a convenience store, and there are shopping malls connected to the hotel.

One of the reason why we chose to stay at this hotel was that it's very convenient location for shopping and dining.

Family Mart Convenience Store (1F)

Family Mart, a convenience store opens 24h, is located on the first floor. We visited there to purchase some snacks and freshly brewed coffee.

Freshly Brewed Iced Coffee of Family Mart Convenience Store
Freshly brewed coffee from Japanese convenience stores tasted so good. This medium size iced coffee from Family Mart was only 180 yen.

Alpa Shopping Mall (B1 to 3F)

Alpa

You can access to Alpa shopping mall from the first floor of this hotel. We visited Zoff, 3COINS, Francfranc, Lattice and some restaurants.

Zoff at Alpa

It was very convenient to pick up eyeglasses he purchased at Zoff, which is located on the second floor of Alpa. He purchased two pairs of eyeglasses for 9,500yen ($68) there. I will write about it in my future entry.

Tsukiji Tamasushi
We enjoyed fresh sushi and kaisen bowl at Tsukiji Tamasushi (築地玉寿司), located on the third floor of Alpa.
Tuskijidon (築地丼)

This Tsukijidon (築地丼), kaisen bowl and miso soup, was so fresh and good. It was 1628 yen ($12).

There are more of great restaurants you can enjoy at Alpa shopping mall. In addition to this mall, there are many great stores and restaurants you can go to by walk from Sunshine City Prince Hotel. I went to Muji (無印良品), Uniqlo (ユニクロ), Donki (ドン.キホーテ), some drugstores, Starbucks, Sukiya (すき家), Nakau (なか卯) and so on.

 Sunshine City Prince Hotel

1F  Sunshine City Prince Hotel Lobby
The staffs at Sunshine City Prince Hotel were very nice. After checked out of hotel, we asked a front-desk clerk if they could store our heavy luggage, so we were able to walk to a hospital for a complete medical checkup.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room
We booked City Floor Semi Double Room, which has a semi-double bed (140 x 195cm), which is smaller than an US queen-sized bed but large enough for two people. The room is pretty small (16.6㎡, 178 sq ft), but it was still spacious enough for us.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room

There is a long narrow table.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room
There were two complimentary bottles of water.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room
     There was a small refrigerator.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room
The bathroom was nice and clean. It's common that a Japanese hotel room has a Japanese high-tech toilet, Washlet.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room
Their free toiletries included toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath sponges, shower caps, Q-tips and so on. The room has a Panasonic Ionity hair dryer.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room

There was POLA Shower Break Plus Foam Soap (for face, hands and shaving). POLA is a very famous Japanese company making beauty products such as their famous POLA Wrinkle Shot.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room

There were POLA Esthe Royer (エステロワイエ) shampoo, conditioner and body soap. It's an affordable small room, but I was able to soak in a bathtub and enjoyed using Japanese shampoo and body soap products.

City Floor (17F - 24F) - Semi Double Room

Overall

I really love this hotel because of the perfect location. Even when it rains outside, you can still enjoy shopping and dining at Alpa shopping mall, where you can go to from the first floor of this hotel. You can also go to Ikebukuro Station by walk in 10 minutes.

Next day, we stayed at Conrad Tokyo. I will write about it in my future entry.

My all time favorite keshosui is Muji Light Toning Water Moisture. 👍

As you might know, when I visited Japan, I always purchased some bottles of Muji Light Toning Water Moisture, which is my all time favorite keshosui. You can check out my previous entry, My Best Keshosui, Muji Light Toning Water.

However, this time, I also purchased some other products, which are highly rated and very popular in Japan. Today, I'm going to share with you three Japanese lotions, keshosui, I purchased in Japan. If you don't know what keshosui (化粧水) is, you can check my previous entry, 5 Best Japanese Facial Lotion (Toner), Keshosui .

I purchased this Momo Puri Moist Barrier Lotion M because it has won many beauty awards in Japan. According to LDK Beauty Magazine, it is the best keshosui moisturizes your skin super well.

Momo Puri series won the LDK beauty awards of 2022 again!

I also purchased very popular Momo Puri nyueki which I will share with you next time. I cannot wait to try these out.

According to Rohto, it contains white tranexamic acid which works for dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

This Woman Method Triple A Moist Intensive Lotion is one of store-brand products of Matsukiyo, Matsumotokiyoshi drugstore, is well-known drugstore chain in Japan. What I Ate Traditional Japanese Foods for This New Year's Holidays and Our New Year's Day Hike

New Year's holidays, which are called oshogatsu (お正月) in Japanese, are the most important holidays for Japanese people. Today, I'm going to share with you what I ate this New Year's holidays.

Traditional Japanese Food for New Year's Eve

It's a Japanese traditional that osoji (大掃除), big cleaning, is done in late December before the New Year comes. Indeed, my husband and I did osoji all day long on New Year's Eve. The last meal before the New Year came was toshikoshi soba.  It's a Japanese traditional to eat soba noodles, which are called toshikoshi soba (年越しそば, 年越し蕎麦).

Toshikoshi Soba (年越し蕎麦)

Toshikoshi Soba

This time, my husband cooked chicken soba noodles. He topped soba noodles with Tyson Grilled & Ready Fully Cooked Southwest Grilled Chicken Breast Strips because it's easier. Dried soba noodles were one we purchased in Japan about a month ago. 😉

Traditional Japanese Foods for New Year

Japanese New Year (Shogatsu) runs January 1 through January 7 (O-shogatsu, 大正月) or January 15 (Ko-shogatsu, 小正月). Specially, January 1 through January 3 is called sanganichi (三が日), and people visit shrines and meet families and relatives for the first time in the year and enjoy Japanese traditional New Year's foods.

Osechi (おせち料理)

During New Year's holiday, people in Japan eat Osechi (おせち), Osechi Ryori (おせち料理). Osechi is a collection of lucky foods such as chikuzenni, kuromame, kamaboko and so on.

Osechi

Zoni (雑煮), Mochi Soup
During New Year's holiday, it's a Japanese traditional to eat mochi. Specially, mochi soup which is called zoni (雑煮) or ozoni (お雑煮) is commonly eaten in Japan during New Year's holiday.

Zoni
This year, my husband cooked this zoni for New Year's soup. If you are interested in how to cook zoni, you can check out my previous entry, How to Cook Zoni, Japanese Mochi Soup for New Year's Day.

 Chikuzenni (筑前煮), Nishime (煮しめ)

Chikuzenni
I cooked this chikuzenni as our Osechi. I used some vegetable, konjack and chicken. If you are interested in how to cook chikuzenni, you can check out my previous entry, How to Cook Chikuzenni, Japanese Simmered Chicken and Vegetables.

Kuromame (黒豆), Sweetened Japanese Black Beans

Kuromame
I cooked this kuromame (黒豆), sweetened black beans, as our Osechi for my first time. I thought that it would be difficult, but it was easier than I expected. However, it took about four hours. I will write about kuromame recipe in my future entry.

It's not a traditional Japanese New Year's food, but I made a lot of taiyaki on January 1st!

It's because tai (鯛) is a lucky fish! Tai (鯛, たい) means a red snapper, sea bream, in Japanese. People in Japan eat a broiled red snapper on happy events such as on a wedding day, baby's 100th day, New Year's day and etc. Auspicious is called medetai (めでたい) in Japanese. "Tai ha medetai (鯛はめでたい)" means tai is a good luck fish. That's why taiyaki is a kind of a good luck fish-shaped cake and can be eaten all year round.

Taiyaki

A traditional taiyaki has sweetened azuki bean pastes. If you are interested in how to make taiyaki, you can check out my previous entry, How to Make Perfect Taiyaki, Japanese Fish-Shaped Cake .

Our New Year's Day Hike!

San Gabriel River Bike Trail

It was raining on New Year's Eve all day long. It finally stopped raining in the early morning on January 1st. That's why we decided to hike in Orange County. We finally chose San Gabriel River trail for our first hike of 2023 because we hoped that we could see sea turtles in the river. Because of after storm, it was very windy and cold, and we were not able to find sea turtles this time unlike our previous hike. You can also check out my previous entry, Green Sea Turtles in San Gabriel River - Seal Beach / Long Beach .

San Gabriel River Bike Trail

However, we were able to see beautiful rainbows twice on January 1st! How lucky we were!

San Gabriel River Bike Trail

I thought that 2023 will be a great year!
