Happy New Year 2017 - Japanese New Year Cards, Nengajo

      Happy New Year Everyone!
It's custom that many people in Japan send New Year's cards, which is called nengajyo (年賀状), to friends, families and business associates. Many New Year's cards have illustration of the animal of the year in them. Did you know that 2017 is the Year of Rooster (酉年)?
I hope you have a happy and successful year ahead. :)

Decorating A Christmas Tree

I decorated this Christmas tree in my apartment on Thanksgiving Day. This year, I decided to place it in my bedroom. :) I enjoy watching my pretty huge Christmas tree from my bed. I feel like as if I were staying at a mountain lodge or cozy hotel. :)

Blood Moon, A Total Lunar Eclipse on September 27, 2015

As I mentioned in my yesterday's entry, my husband and I saw a total lunar eclipse and took some pictures last night. The moon was totally eclipsed around 7:40 p.m. He used his camera, Canon EOS SL1. Taking picture of the blood moon was not easy, but I thought that he did really good job! I will share our photos with you. :))  By the way, the original photos were too large, so I resized photos to minimum in order not to run out of memory on my blog.

Total Lunar Eclipse

The Moon was totally eclipsed around 5 a.m. last Saturday. My husband and I are usually asleep around that time, but we woke up and got outside to observe the moon.
Lunar Eclipse on April 4, 2015

If truth be told, I didn't expect that we would be able to wake up such an early morning. That's why we didn't well prepare for the observation. Our tripod was still in our garage, but we didn't open the garage because it would possibly disturb neighbors' sleep. That's why we took pictures without the tripod. If we had used a tripod, we could have taken much more great pictures. However, considering darkness, we were able to take pretty good pictures of the lunar eclipse. :) I'm going to share the pictures with you.

Lunar eclipse is also called "blood moon" because of its red color. I was surprised that it looked actually red (or pink).

Christmas Tree Decorating 2014

Today, my husband and I decorated this huge Christmas tree in our living room. This artificial tree, which we purchased last year, is taller than us! :)

We put up this Starbucks 2014 California ornament to our tree. :) This ornament is released at Starbucks stores in California only.

How to Make a Jack-o'-lantern for Halloween

My Jack-o'-lantern for Halloween

My husband and I made six Halloween pumpkins this year, and this Jack-o'-lantern, which was pretty easy to make, was one of them. :) Since it's not common to make Jack-o'-lanterns in Halloween in Japan, I wanted to show how to make it in Japanese through Youtube.  I usually tended to choose more difficult pattern for making Halloween lantern every year, but I chose easier one which everyone can try this year. :) Anyway I'm going to share how to make it with you. :)

A fresh pumpkin
A pumpkin carving saw
A scoop or a tablespoon
A needle tool or a fork
A knife
Candles
A candle lighter

1. Cut a hole on the bottom of your pumpkin with a carving saw. Then, dig out all of the guts and seeds with a large tablespoon.

2. Draw your design on paper for your pumpkin pattern.

3. Tape the pattern to your pumpkin. Then, poke holes to outline the pattern with the a sharp pointed tool.

4. Remove the pattern and tape from your pumpkin. Then, cut on the dots starting from the smallest area.

How to Make Halloween Lantern with a Power Drill

How to Make Halloween Lantern with a Power Drill

This year, my husband and I used the power drill for making Halloween lanterns for our first time. I thought it would be much easier to make them with using power drill but was actually harder than I expected. The power drill was pretty heavy for me and cleaning each hole was a lot of work. However, they turned out very beautiful lanterns as you can see the picture above. :)  I'm going to share how to make pumpkin lanterns with a power drill with you.

1. Cut a hole on the bottom of your pumpkin with a carving saw. Then, dig out all of the guts and seeds with a large tablespoon.

2. Mark your pumpkin with a sharpie marker to make sure where you are going to drill.

3. Drill your pumpkins. You can use different sized drill bits.

 4. After drilling, scrape the inside of the pumpkin with drill bits you used or something fits the holes to get all the loose pulp out from the holes.
