Namie Amuro Is Going to Perform at NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen This Year!

Namie Amuro (安室 奈美恵), a popular Japanese recording artist and dancer, announced that she would retire from the music industry in September of 2018.

She debuted at age 14 as a singer, and she turned 40 this year. She has been always the top artist of Japan.

Especially, in the 90s, so many Japanese women were inspired by her look. Her female fans were called "Amura (アムラー)" who dyes hair brown and wears a short skirt and long boots. I'm amazed at how beautiful she is also now! I like her smile! :)

This year, she is going to perform at NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen (紅白歌合戦), an annual music show on New Year's Eve in Japan. It will be her last appearance on Kohaku Uta Gassen. I'm going to fly to Japan tomorrow, and I hope that I will watch her performance on TV on December 31. :)

Yumi Arai - Hikoukigumo

Today, I listened to this song, Hikoukigumo (ひこうき雲) by Yumi Arai (荒井 由美), whose name is now Yumi Matsutoya (松任谷 由美). Did you know that this song was released in Japan in 1973? I have known this song because it is the theme song of The Wind Rises (風たちぬ), which is one of Hayao Miyazaki's animation films. I haven't watched this movie yet, but I would like to watch it someday because this movie is about old Japan (Taisho through early Showa era). My grandparents who I lived with in Japan until my age 18 were born in Taisho era. I really loved my grandparents, but I don't really know how Japan was like when they were very young.

The song, Hikoukigumo, also reminded me of Mao Kobayashi. Last week, Mao Kobayashi, who was a Japanese newscaster and was named one of the BBC's 100 Women in 2016, died at age 34.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, and her husband, Ebizo Ichikawa, the heir to the prestigious Ichikawa clan of kabuki actors, announced her condition at a press conference last summer. It was very shocking new to me because I used to watch her TV show in Japan many years ago. After the announcement, I started reading her husband's blog. (I didn't use to read Japanese celebrities' blogs before that.) Soon after, Mao Kobayashi also started her own blog and shared her thoughts and conditions through the blog. I've checked her blog almost every day for a year. When her husband announced that she had passed away on June 22, I was very sad. Because I read her blog every day, I think I felt like as if I were her family member or a very close friend. I think so many Japanese people felt the same way. When I listened to Hikoukigumo, I remembered that she sometimes shared photos of sky through her blog. I miss her so much.

Blouson Chiemi, A Popular Japanese Comedian - The Song, Dirty Work by Austin Mahone

These days, Blouson Chiemi, a Japanese comedian, has been extremely popular in Japan. In her skit, she plays a successful career woman who can balance her work and love life. She teaches how to be loved like her. By the way, because of extreme popularity, she was chosen as one of main actresses of a serial TV drama, Hito Wa Mitame Ga 100%, this month. She made her debut as a actor as well.

Then, Bilingirl Chika, a Japanese YouTuber who teaches English through her YouTube Channel, made the parody video in English. I really enjoyed watching this video. :)))

Because Blouson Chiemi became extremely popular in Japan, her skit's background music, Dirty Work, a song by Austin Mahone, became a hit song in Japan. She said that she watched this music video and decided to use the song as the background music before she actually made scripts for the soon to be popular skit. This is such a catchy song!

Austin Mahone - Dirty Work

Lyrics

Rolling my sleeves up in here
Make you smile ear to ear
Girl I been hitting that, hitting that graveyard shift
You won't find another one built for this
Dirty work, ooh
Dirty work
Baby I don't need your help
I'd do it all by myself
Girl I been putting in, putting in over time
You ain't gotta tell me what's on your mind

Dirty work, ooh
Dirty work
Cause when you do what you love
You're gonna love what you do
You know I do it with love
Each night I do it for you

It's the dirty work
Somebodies gotta do it
Dirty work
So we're getting into it
Dirty work
Go and get your body moving
You know it ain't no nine to five
We're going sundown to sunrise
Dirty work
Dirty work

I'm filthy down to the core
Leave all your stress at the door
You know you need to stop scrubbing with Mr. Clean
Bring it right here, come next to me

Dirty work, ooh
Dirty work
Cause when you do what you love
You're gonna love what you do
You know I do it with love
Each night I do it for you

It's the dirty work
Somebodies gotta do it
Dirty work
So we're getting into it
Dirty work
Go and get your body moving
You know it ain't no nine to five
We're going sundown to sunrise
Dirty work
Dirty work

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Dirty work
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Dirty work
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

Cause when you do what you love
You're gonna love what you do
You know I do it with love
Every time I'm with you

It's the dirty work
Somebodies gotta do it
Dirty work
So we're getting into it
Dirty work
Go and get your body moving
You know it ain't no nine to five
We're going sundown to sunrise
Dirty work
Dirty work

Kobukuro - Tsubomi

Today, I listened to Tsubomi (蕾), a song by Kobukuro (コブクロ), a famous Japanese band. The song was written by Kentaro Kobuchi for his late mother. In 2007, this song was used as theme song of Japanese serial TV drama, Tokyo Tower, which was a story about a bond between mother and son. When I lived in Japan, I watched all episodes of this TV drama with my husband. He told me that his mother also worked very hard to raise him and his brother in Fukuoka, Japan. When I listen to this song, it reminds me of his mother. She is very gentle, humble and friendly, and she has been my ideal woman. :)

Yesterday, she sent me this picture which she took near Bengara Village (べんがら村), a small hot spring mall in Yame city in Fukuoka prefecture. She wanted to take pictures of beautiful cherry blossoms to show me Japanese spring flowers, but it's been raining in Fukuoka. When it rains, cherry blossoms won't last very long. She took this picture on a rainy day before cherry blossoms are gone. How sweet she is. ;)

Kobukuro - Mirai (Orange - Japanese Film Based on The Comic Book)

Today, I listened to Mirai (未来), a song by Kobukuro (コブクロ), a famous Japanese band. This song was released for Orange (オレンジ), a Japanese film based on the comic book, in 2015.

Official Music Video (Comic Version) of Mirai by Kobukuro

When I watched these Official music videos, these reminded me of my high school life in Japan. It was many years ago, but I remembered that I was very busy for study but also really enjoyed hanging out with my friends at that time. I went from preschool through college in Japan, and my most favorite school life was definitely high school. :) You can check out my previous entry, Why Do You Love Japan?

Naotaro Moriyama, Japanese Singer-Songwriter

Spring is the best season to travel in Japan because you can see beautiful sakuras, cherry blossoms, every where in Japan. When the spring has come, I often listen to Sakura (さくら), a song by Naotaro Moriyama (森山直太朗). The song was released in Japan in 2003, and since then it has been chosen as a Japanese choral music by many schools. I heard that cherry blossoms has finally started blooming in Japan this week. :)

Sakura - Naotaro Moriyama

Last night, I thought that I should purchase his music album because I love many of his songs. I found that in this video, Naotaro Moriyama shows how he had made his music album, Ougon No Kokoro (黄金の心), from scratch. :) According to his video, he had made the albums with very unique ways in a traditional Japanese house. :)

However, this album, Ougon No Kokoro, doesn't include Sakura, so I would like to purchase another his album, Daikessakusen (大傑作選), which has many of his best songs such as Sakura (さくら) and Itoshi Kimie (愛し君へ).

Daikessakusen (大傑作選) also includes this song, Dokomokashikomo Chushajo (どこもかしこも駐車場), which means parking lots are everywhere. The lyrics are very simple, but after watching his music video, I thought the song tells a lot.

James Blunt - You're Beautiful

Since I found my Panasonic Portable MD Player in my garage last year, I have sometimes listened to songs from MDs I brought from Japan in 2008.
Panasonic Portable MD Player

As I mentioned in my previous entry, if you didn't live in Japan in 1990s and 2000s, you probably have no idea what MD is because MD made a limited impact outside Japan. :) MD was actually very popular in Japan back then, and I believe that all my friends in Japan had MD players.
MDs

Today, I listened to Beautiful Songs, which is the music album contains 21 English songs.
Beautiful Songs
When I lived in Japan, I couldn't understand English at all but enjoyed listening to English songs sometimes. I couldn't read lyrics in English and couldn't catch any words from the songs even though I often listened. However, I can catch the most of them and understand lyrics now. It's pretty strange that the songs were exactly as I remembered, but I felt like it's different.

My favorite song from the music album, Beautiful Songs, was You're Beautiful by James Blunt. This song was used as background music in a Japanese serial drama and some Japanese TV commercials such as Toyota Vitz and Shiseido Tsubaki. When I listened to this song in Japan, I thought this beautiful song must be a happy love song, but now I know that it's actually a heartbreak song. You know how strange it is!

Lyrics

My life is brilliant
My life is brilliant
My love is pure
I saw an angel
Of that I'm sure
She smiled at me on the subway
She was with another man
But I won't lose no sleep on that
'Cause I've got a plan

You're beautiful
You're beautiful
You're beautiful, it's true
I saw your face in a crowded place
And I don't know what to do
'Cause I'll never be with you

Yes, she caught my eye
As we walked on by
She could see from my face that I was,
Fuckin' high
And I don't think that I'll see her again
But we shared a moment that will last till the end

You're beautiful
You're beautiful
You're beautiful, it's true
I saw your face in a crowded place
And I don't know what to do
'Cause I'll never be with you

You're beautiful
You're beautiful
You're beautiful, it's true
There must be an angel with a smile on her face
When she thought up that I should be with you
But it's time to face the truth
I will never be with you

Aska - Fukuoka

As I mentioned in my previous entry, Aska, a Japanese pop singer-songwriter, was arrested for allegedly using illegal stimulant drug last month, but he was eventually released from custody this week because the case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence.

He has been working hard on making new songs for his new album this year, and he finally announced his new song, FUKUOKA, in his blog today. Now, you can listen to the song on his YouTube Channel.

Since he was first arrested on drug charges in 2014, it has been very hard for him to find a place which allows him to record his music and people who work with him. Finally, his hometown, Fukuoka, welcomed him and work on his new music album together.

This morning, I was very excited to listen to his new song. :) Actually, I didn't expect that he would release his new song on YouTube in this year.   I thought that this song was the best Christmas present from Aska for millions of people. :)

Aska, A Japanese Pop Singer-Songwriter

A few days ago, Aska, a Japanese pop singer-songwriter, was arrested for allegedly using illegal stimulant drug. It was very shocking news in Japan. He was first arrested for illegal stimulant drug possession in 2014, and he was suspended for four-year sentence. I hoped that he would recover from drug addiction because he is one of the greatest musicians in Japan. I remembered that I often listened to Yah Yah Yah, one of his hit songs, when I was a child, and many of his songs were used as theme songs for popular Japanese TV drama series.

I read his blog and knew that he writes songs and lyrics based on his own experiences. Yesterday, I watched this video and realized how beautiful his songs are once again. The lyrics, melody and his voice are amazing. At the same time, I was very sad that we might be losing him.

As I read through his blog, I thought that the problems that he has are not only drug addiction. He needs to overcome a lot from now. It's not easy and might take years and years, but I really hope that he will get over all difficulty and show us his brilliant music again.

Josh Woodward and Katie Pederson - My Favorite Regret

Today, I uploaded my new video, How to Make Creamy Japanese Coffee Flan, on my YouTube Channel. I recorded this video at my previous apartment two months ago. If truth be told, I recorded one more video there and am planning on editing and uploading it next month hopefully. It's been over a month since my husband and I moved into this home, but we don't still have enough time to film new videos because of our home renovations.

Anyway, this time, I used My Favorite Regret, a song of Josh Woodward and Katie Pederson, as background music for this video. :)

Music - "My Favorite Regret" by Josh Woodward. Free download: http://joshwoodward.com/

Lyrics

The day that we met
I'll never forget
I knew from the moment she spoke
The she, was destined to be
My favorite regret

And all through the years
The joy and the tears
We shared like as greatest of friends
But she, was destined to be
My favorite regret

Well, each moment we've spent
I've been almost content
Just to talk to her all through the night

But a part of me mourns
What will never be born
She's forever my favorite regret

He's gentle and kind
And totally blind
To not see the life we could lead
And he, is destined to be
My favorite regret

In bad times and good
I've steadfastly stood
My passion just waits to be freed
But he, is destined to be
My favorite regret
Well, I've got more to give
But I'm happy to live
In the shadow, of what could’ve been

But a part of me yearns
Like an ember, it burns
Forever, my favorite regret

One day, when the stars fade
Will the echoes of my love
Arrive to you above
And wake you up at last

I'll take what I've got
Put the rest in a box
Addressed to the stars in the sky
And soon, up there with the moon
My favorite regret
Forever my favorite regret

Lyrics

When I drop a plate, I sweep the shards of glass into the trash
When I pop an E string, I can change a new one in a flash
But when you break, I'm stuck without a clue
I never learned to fix a thing like you

When the server's down, you sudo /sbin/reboot in a shell
When the market tanks, you call a broker, tell him "sell sell sell"
But when you're down, I don't know what to do
I never learned to fix a thing like you

    I'll lend an ear
To find out what I need to repair
But I will try and dry your eyes and fix the scattered parts
Yeah, I will learn to mend your troubled heart

When I cut my hand, I grab the Neosporin from the shelf
When I stub my toe, I curse in flowing verses to myself
But when you hurt, I'm stuck without a clue
I never learned to fix a thing like you

When a faucet leaks, I tighten up the gasket with a wrench
When a toilet's stuck, I plunge it down before the floor is drenched
But when you cry, I don't know what to do
I never learned to fix a thing like you

   I'll lend an ear
To find out what I need to repair
But I will try and dry your eyes and fix the scattered parts
Yeah, I will learn to mend your troubled heart

I know, I'm slow
I've got so much to learn
But you'll see, I'll be
The place that you can turn

   I'll lend an ear
To find out what I need to repair
But I will try and dry your eyes and fix the scattered parts
Yeah, I will learn to mend your troubled heart

Josh Woodward - Princess

A few days ago, I uploaded this video, 4 Tips: How to Store Coffee Beans Properly, on my YouTube Channel. It's very important to store coffee beans properly because fresher coffee beans provide better coffee taste. I use Ball Mason Jars as an airtight container to keep coffee beans fresh.
Anyway, this time, I used Princess, one of Josh Woodward's songs, as background music in this video. Today, I looked up the words I didn't know before from the lyrics.

Music - "Princess" by Josh Woodward. Free download: http://joshwoodward.com/song/Princess

Lyrics

There's a little girl in Skibbereen, with flowing hair and ragged jeans
And floating in a vivid dream, as classes go by

And every day at 3 o'clock, she's out the door and down the block
And hurries to the river dock, a gleam in her eyes

And everything's fine for the day
There's nothing to get in the way of her smile
There's never a care for tomorrow
 Cuz Molly's a princess today

The barricade's a castle wall, 47 miles tall
The river’s got a waterfall, the moat is so deep

The cedar trees are canopies, a ceiling made of needle leaves
A buzzing fleet of honeybees is guarding the keep

And no one can take this away
What lives in her mind will remain there to stay
There's never a care for tomorrow
 Cuz Molly's a princess today

Real life can be lifeless and cold
When your heart grows up and gets old
The dreams of your past never seem to quite last
In a future that's so far away
But here in the place, you know Molly… is a princess today

In little while, it's dinnertime, she leaves the kingdom in her mind
A bookmark in the storyline, a chapter is done

The mystery of what will be, tomorrow, when the clock strikes three
There beneath the cedar trees, the princess will come

And there's nothing that she couldn't do
When she closes her eyes, and imagines the view
There's never a care for tomorrow
 Cuz Molly's a princess today
Yeah, there's never a care for tomorrow
 Cuz Molly's a princess today

Music - "Goodbye To Spring" by Josh Woodward. Free download: http://joshwoodward.com/song/GoodbyeToSpring

Lyrics

Lay, and put your weary soul to rest
Yeah, I will try to do my best to keep you safe inside this nest
And keep the gravity from pulling you to earth

I'd like to say this gets more clear, when it's more cloudy every day
But summer's gonna come and burn the stormy clouds and all the doubt away

Sleep, little girl, 'cause when you wake it's gonna be a different world
So close your eyes and say goodbye to spring

It's true, this spring is coming to an end
You're not that fragile anymore, I know what's there behind that door
And it's just waiting in the wings to pull you in

I know you think you're safe in here, inside these insulated walls
But I can't hold this house together, not forever, yeah and soon it's gonna fall

Sleep, little girl, 'cause when you wake it's gonna be a different world
Everything will change, everything will change
This door's slamming shut, it's gonna catch you if you're ready or you're not
So close your eyes and say goodbye to spring

Slow down, 'cause winter's just around the bend
Don't make a sound, and close your eyes and say goodbye, yeah

    [Chorus x 2]

Josh Woodward - Epilogue

Yesterday, I uploaded my video, How to Make Thai Iced Coffee, on my YouTube channel. I try to update a coffee tutorial video every 2 to 3 weeks, but it's been a month since I uploaded my previous video!
This time, I used Epilogue, one of songs of Josh Woodward, as background music. Like always, I would like to study about new vocabularies from the lyrics.

Music - "Epilogue" by Josh Woodward. Free download: http://joshwoodward.com/song/Epilogue

Lyrics

These feet have carried me as far as I will go
Across the field to where the wind had ceased to blow
That day, when sorrow filled the air and all the blackbirds scattered everywhere
And you had gone as far as you would go

In my reflection, you are staring back at me
My eyes are mirrors of the dreams you used to see
But now I'm fumbling in the dark, where all the memories are far apart
And there I lost the forest for the trees

In the gloaming of the day
The words are darkening away

   Take another look
There's no more pages in this book
The epilogue was written in the dirt
   The story's at an end
It's time to put away my pen
And join the you by the earth

There was a tremble in the marrow of my bones
Distorted and contorted like a worn out megaphone
And through the bellow and the bluster, I was shaking, I was flustered
With a body full of star-crossed chromosomes

And through the clatter there emerged a single voice
A familiar sound I hadn't heard since I was just a boy
And all at once my fears were lifted as the echoes slowly drifted
To the center of the amplifying void

And I followed like a child, so carefree and so wild

    [Chorus]

Well there's music everywhere
The voices carry through the air
But I'm not listening

Jowh Woodward - Morning Blue

A few days ago, I uploaded this video, How to Make Coffee Granita and Espresso Granita, on my YouTube channel. I used one of Josh Woodward's songs, Morning Blue, as background music this time. Today, I looked up vocabularies which I didn't know before from the lyrics.

Music - "Morning Blue" by Josh Woodward. Free download: http://joshwoodward.com/song/MorningBlue

Lyrics

I woke up this morning on the wrong side of the bed
The hazy sunrise wraps a veil around my head
I can't get motivated, the swimming thoughts are drowning in my head
And if by some coincidence I do just what they said

And the morning blue is warning you
This avalanche is storming through
In the dawn of the morning blue
Just take me away

The fire of failed reason, the rain of every season
The patriotic treason, the ringing of the bells
The avalanche of sorrow, the soul afraid to borrow
There is no day tomorrow, it's all about today

 [chorus]

Just set me free and I will be
Afraid enough to find it
Take my hand or take a stand
And I would never mind it
Sit and stare or say a prayer
For all you left behind
Call on me, just never be
The last one in the line

I woke up this morning on the wrong side of the bed
I should have stayed in bed and slept all day instead
There ain't no profit in this day that lies ahead
These blurry images still echo in my head

[chorus]

Lyrics

If anybody wants to find me
I'll be in the last place you would look
In a place where people used to be
A land that's called reality
You'll find me there

I won't be catching up on Reddit
I won't be watching any news
I'll let the planet spin without me
Cuz everything has been without me sometime

And everyone will be alright, if I'm not live by satellite

It's a beautiful day, I'm running away
Don't bother to Facebook message or call me
Cuz I'm living life in airplane mode
And everything is ok, I just wanna play
Unplug for a day, and live in the moment
Cuz I'm living life in airplane mode

I'm always drowning in the static
I'd rather swim in crystal seas
My battery's been running low
I need to take it nice and slow for just awhile

You won't be hearing bout my weather
And you won't see my breakfast pics
For videos of kitty cats
All gussied up in pretty hats, you'll have to wait

I hope it's not a tragedy, I hope you don't get mad at me

 [Chorus]

Everything is now, everyone is everywhere
But no one seems to get up from their chairs
I'll come and sit with you, let's talk and have a drink or two
We'll open up the window for some air

And hear the voices down the street
Of children playing on the beach

It's... a... beautiful day
Don't... take... it away
I... just... want to play...
Cuz I'm living life in airplane mode, yeah

[Chorus]

Josh Woodward - Learn to Fly

Today, I finally uploaded this video, How to Make Cafe de Olla, on my YouTube Channel. This time, I used Learn to Fly, one of Josh Woodward's songs as background music. Today, I looked up vocabularies which I didn't know before from the lyrics.

Lyrics

A sticky summers' day in Shepherdstown
An eagle in a thermal is a' circlin' round
Like a tire on a bike rolling down Columbus Street

Katie got a little look of hope in her eye
Arms unfold as she looked to the sky
and said, "I'm going to learn to fly around with you"

She jumped up high and she fell to the ground
Skinned her little knee and made a horrible sound
She got right up and she tried again
Smiling all the way with her unstoppable grin

Take time, do what you're going to do
Just smile, you're gonna make it through
Your wings are going to spread and lift you off the ground
Take time, do what you're going to do
Just smile, you're gonna make it through
Your wings are going to sprout and you will learn to fly

All the other children used to laugh at her
They say your head is in the clouds and when you come back to earth
That the men in the white coats, they will all be waiting for you

But Katie knew that there was something they didn't see
She climbed up to the top of the sycamore tree
and said, "look out world, I'm going to fly away"

She stood so tall and with all her might
She took a flying leap of an astonishing height
A wind blew through and it carried her high
and Katie knew that she was just beginning to fly

[chorus, solo, chorus]

Josh Woodward - Perfect

Last Sunday, I uploaded this video, How to Brew Coffee with Bodum Pour Over Coffee Maker. This time, I used Perfect, one of Josh Woodward's songs, as background music. Today, I looked up some vocabularies I didn't know before from the lyrics.

Music - "Perfect" by Josh Woodward. Free download: http://joshwoodward.com/song/Perfect

Lyrics

You take coffee with your cream, you squee like a teen
And the Hugh Grant stuff you've watched enough, you mumble it in your dreams

Rock out on a broom, and mangle some tunes
On weekends dance in jammy pants until the afternoon

And I know it's hard to think that someone could be in sync
With all your eccentricities

You're perfect in the perfect way
You're perfect, and I hope you stay
Your goofy little self eternally, whoa-oh

I'm weird like you, I know it's true
I'm in the clouds up there with you
You think you're flawed, but wouldn't you agree
    You're perfect for me

You talk to yourself, and answer as well
You read ahead on Walking Dead before you watch the show

You eat bread with fur, you still call me sir
There's a piece of gum from '91 that's hiding in your purse

But no matter what I sing, I wouldn't change a thing
You're my postmodern masterpiece

    Chorus

It seems your mind and mine, are strangely intertwined
And that's just a-ok with me

    Chorus

Madonna - Jump

Today, I listened to Jump, one of Madonna's songs. This song was also used as background music in my all-time favorite movie, The Devil Wears Prada. I didn't know that the promotion video of this song was shot in Japan!

Lyrics

There's only so much you can learn in one place
The more that I wait, the more time that I waste

I haven't got much time to waste
It's time to make my way
I'm not afraid of what I'll face
But I'm afraid to stay
I'm going down my road and I can make it alone
I'll work and I'll fight till I find a place of my own

[Chorus]
Are you ready to jump
Get ready to jump
Don't ever look back oh baby
Yes, I'm ready to jump
Just take my hand
get ready to jump

We learned out lesson from the start
My sisters and me
The only thing you can depend on
Is your family
Life's gonna drop you down like the limbs from a tree
It sways and it swings and it bends until it makes you see

[Chorus]

Are you ready?

There's only so much you can learn in one place
The more that you wait
The more time that you waste

I'll work and I'll fight till I find a place of my own

It sways and it swings and it bends until you make it your own

I can make it alone [repeat]
(my sisters and me)

[Chorus X2]
