Josh Woodward - East Side Bar

      My current most favorite musician is Josh Woodward. I have often used his songs in my YouTube video as background music. The lyrics of most his songs are pretty difficult for me because English is my second language. Today, I checked the vocabularies which I didn't know before of the lyrics of East Side Bar.

Hiking in Lava Tube Cave - Traveling the Big Island, Hawaii - Day 4-1

       On the day before leaving from the Big Island, it was a very beautiful sunny day. My husband and I decided to take a lot of photos because we were planning on making our traveling photo book. We headed toward Kohala from Kailua-Kona. We saw the desolate black lava landscape while driving on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway.

          While driving north, we unexpectedly found this huge lava tube which was produced by Hualalai lava flow in 1801. We pulled our car to the side of the road and decided to go inside of the lava tube.

       We hiked on black lava rocky ground. Some rocks were pretty unstable, so it was a little difficult to walk even with running shoes there. I couldn't believe that some people did with flip-flops.

Place of Refuge - Traveling the Big Island, Hawaii - Day 3-2/2

        After swimming with wild dolphins on January 2, my husband and I had lunch at Da Poke Shack, Hawaiian poke restaurant. Then, we went to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. This place is also called Place of Refuge.  Official Website of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park reads, "imagine you had just broken the sacred laws, the kapu, and the only punishment was death.  Your only chance of survival is to elude your pursuers and reach the Pu'uhonua, a place of refuge.  The Pu'uhonua protected the kapu breaker, defeated warriors, as well as civilians during the time of battle.  No harm could come to those who reached the boundaries of the place of refuge".
        When we arrived there at 4 p.m., it was not crowded at all. The car entrance fee was $5.

       It's a self-guided tour. We got a map of Place of Refuge and looked around the park.

       At the park, I found this tree of noni, which I had never seen before. I've heard a lot about noni that noni tastes awful but is very good for health.

       Noni tree was brought to Hawai'i by the early Polynesian settlers and was used as a medicinal tonic to treat digestive problems.

        There were some reconstructed ancient structures, and we learned about ancient Hawaiian culture.

      The Place of Refuge is one of the must see spots on the Big Island. :)  After leaving this park, we went back to our hotel, Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay, to have dinner at Rays on the Bay.

Swimming with Wild Dolphins - Traveling the Big Island, Hawaii - Day 3-1/2

       The main reason why my husband and I traveled the Big Island was that we really wanted to swim with wild dolphins in our lifetime! My husband found that there were some dolphin tours on the Big Island, and we finally chose Masashi's Nature School, a local Japanese tour operator. On January 2, my husband and I woke up early morning and had a light breakfast on our way to dolphin tour meeting place.

        When we arrived there, two friendly guides were waiting for us. Fortunately, members of the dolphin tour that day were only two of us. They provided snorkels, masks, fins and wetsuits. As soon as we got there, we tried those on for size.

Honokohau Small Boat Harbor

       A Japanese guide explain well us how to behave around wild dolphins. Before going to ocean, he told us make sure not to touch dolphins because it is against the law of state of Hawaii to harass wild dolphins. We rode the yellow Inflatable speed boat.

       Despite a cloudy day, the sea was very calm. :)  However, the boat moved incredibly very fast, so the boat rocked violently back and forth. I was pretty scared and held tight to a handrail.

Dolphin Tour 



         After while, we saw some schools of wild dolphins swimming and spinning! We quickly went in water and saw beautiful wild dolphins swimming underneath us. We were able to hear dolphins' sonar in the water!

         Some dolphins came close to us and swam along us for a little while. :)

       Swimming with wild dolphins was truly amazing experience, and it was the most memorable one during our travel on the Big Island. :)

       We bought Sony Action Cam, a waterproof action camera, prior to our trip to Hawaii and recorded in water that day. :) I uploaded this YouTube video, Swimming with Wild Dolphins in Hawaii.

Thomas A. Jaggar Museum - Traveling the Big Island, Hawaii - Day 2-6/6

      After leaving from Steam Vents, my husband and I went to Thomas A. Jaggar Museum Overlook to see the glow from the active volcano. When we arrived there around 6 p.m., it was very easy to find a parking space. However, soon after sunset, the parking area got very busy. It's because this overlook is very popular to observe that the glow from the lava lake of Halemaumau, a crater on Kilauea, is visible after dark.

        I found there was Nene Crossing Sign around the parking lot! Nene, inhabits lava plains, is also known as Hawaiian goose and is the official bird of state of Hawaii. We were not able to see nene during our traveling but saw some Nene Crossing Signs at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

         At the overlook, we waited for the sun to go down.

       After sunset, we were able to see the red-orange glow from the active volcano. It was pretty cold while we were watching the glow, but we waited more until really dark.

         By seeing this red glow, I understood that Kīlauea is hyperactive volcano, and this island is still vigorously growing. It was an unforgettable experience for us during traveling the Big Island, Hawaii.

Steam Vents - Traveling the Big Island, Hawaii - Day 2-5/6

        My husband and I headed toward Steam Vents in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on January 1 after leaving from Thurston Lava Tube. We noticed where Steam Vents was very easily because we were able to see steam rising from the roads. Steam Vent parking area was not crowded at all, so we parked there and come close to the steam.

       At the parking lot, there was a man-made steam hole as you can see the photo below. I noticed the slight smell of sulfur near the vent.

        We decide to hike to get to Steaming Buff Overlook.

      After walking on the trail for 5 minutes or so, we arrived at Steaming Buff Overlook, on the caldera's edge. This was the Kilauea Caldera. Kilauea is a currently hyperactive shield volcano in Hawaii and one of the most active volcanoes in the world. We were able to see more steam coming out from the caldera.

        On the way back to  the Steam Vents parking area, we passed plenty of steam. Then, we headed toward Jaggar Museum.
