Happy New Year 2025! - It's the Year of the Snake

Happy New Year Everyone!

Did you know that 2024 is the Year of the Snake (巳年)?

In Japan, it's customary to send New Year's cards, called nengajyo (年賀状), to friends, family, and business associates. These cards often feature illustrations of the year's zodiac animal. However, in recent years, more people have stopped sending nengajyo to save time and reduce mailing costs.

I made this nengajyo for my readers using my iPad and Logitech iPad Pencil. The white snake is believed to bring good luck with money! I hope it brings you all prosperity this year.

Happy New Year 2024! - It's the Year of the Dragon

Happy New Year Everyone!

Did you know that 2024 is the Year of the Dragon (辰年)?

I made this nengajyo for my readers. With using my iPad and Logitech iPad Pencil, I drew this one referring to Manga Nihon Mukashibanashi (まんが日本昔ばなし), which is a Japanese animated folktales and was ran from 1975 through 1994 in Japan. When I was a child, I watched Manga Nihon Mukashibanashi in Japan every week. These flying dragon and a child holding a den-den daiko (でんでん太鼓), pellet drum, in his hand were seen during the opening theme song. This scene of the dragon is my favorite childhood memory of Japan.

Happy New Year 2023! - It's the Year of the Rabbit!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Did you know that 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit (卯年)?

I made this nengajyo for my readers. With using my iPad and Apple Pencil, I drew this eto daruma (干支だるま) for the year of the rabbit. Daruma (達磨) is a Japanese traditional good luck dall, which is believed that it helps you to reach your goal.

Happy New Year 2022! - It's the Year of the Tiger!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Did you know that 2022 is the Year of the Tiger (寅年)?

I made this nengajyo for my readers. With using my iPad and Apple Pencil, I drew this hariko (張り子) of the tiger referring to the Otora (大寅), which is also called the World's Greatest Fukutora (世界一の福寅), of the Chogosonshi-ji (朝護孫子寺), a Buddhist temple located in Nara prefecture. By the way, Hariko (張り子) means paper dolls in Japan.

When I lived in Japan, I visited Chogosonshi-ji (朝護孫子寺) with my friends. I also took my families to this temple for sightseeing. 😆 I can say that Chogosonshi-ji is the most interesting tiger temple in Japan. It's because this temple does not only have the huge hariko of tiger, but it also has a lot of tiger statues. You will also enjoy walking through a tiger tunnel there. If you are in Japan this year of the Tiger or love tigers, you should visit the Chogosonshi-ji. I also would like to visit the Chogosonshi-ji again, and I hope that I will have tora manju (寅まんじゅう), tiger-shaped pancake with sweetened red bean jam filling, there. Tora manju is like a ningyo-yaki, which is one of my favorite traditional Japanese confections. 😋

Chogosonshi-ji is also called Shigisan.

Happy New Year 2021! - It's the Year of the OX!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Did you know that 2021 is the Year of the Ox (丑年)? In the Japanese zodiac, it can be the ox, cow, bull and cattle, which are all called ushi (牛) in Japanese.

I made this nengajyo for my readers. With using my iPad and Apple Pencil, I drew this bull referring to the Charging Bull, Wall Street Bull, a bronze sculpture that stands in Manhattan, New York City. I've lived in the U.S. for over 10 years but haven't been New York yet. I hope that I will visit to see the Charging Bull some day. This year, I would like to improve my financial literacy whether it's a bull market or not. 🐂

I will be busier this year but try to keep my blogging to share my thoughts, information about Japan and beauty, and etc with you.

Happy New Year 2020! - It's the Year of the Mouse/Rat!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Did you know that 2020 is the Year of the Mouse (子年)?

It has been custom that many people in Japan send New Year's cards, which is called nengajyo (年賀状), to friends, families and business associates. Many New Year's cards have illustration of the animal of the year in them.

However, more and more Japanese people have decided to stop sending traditional nengajyo these years because writing nengajyo makes people very busy and costs money. When I was child, my family used to send hundreds of nengajyo every year. Especially, my grandmother used to write over a hundred of nengajyo with Japanese fude pen (筆ペン), brush pen. It took her several weeks to finish writing up all nengajyo. More people use PCs and printers to make beautiful nengajyo and save time, but it's also not simple to print out all different addresses if you want to make hundreds of nengajyo. That's why now more people are choosing not to send physical nengajyo, and the younger generation send nengajyo to friends for free by e-mail, SNS and etc.

New Year's day is the most important day for Japanese people, but I haven't sent physical nengajyo since I moved to the U.S. I prefer sending e-cards. I made this nengajyo for my readers. With using my iPad and Apple Pencil, I drew this mouse wearing a red vest and carrying a koban (小判), a Japanese oval gold coin in Edo period. Red is the color of New Year and means joy and good luck, and koban means good luck with money. :)

Happy New Year 2019! - It's the Year of the Boar, Pig! (& My First Drawing!)

Did you know that 2019 is the Year of the Pig (亥年)? In the Japanese zodiac, the Pig is replaced by the boar.

In Japan, there are wild boars indeed. I've never seen ones in Japan, but my father told me that he saw wild boars deep in the mountains once in a while.
