Summarizing an Article from Newspaper

I summarized an article of newspaper for my assignment today. Because of that, I chose three articles from O.C. Register and read them carefully yesterday. I don't usually read newspapers even though we are subscribing them. :( Reading articles from newspaper was more difficult than I thought. I know my reading skill is not good enough, and I need to get used to it. I finally chose one article which was "How We Began Enjoying More by Indulging Less" by Katy McLaughlin. I learned many vocabulary from this article.

These are the vocabularies I learned this article.

pick up : phrasal verb / 好転する
ex) His career picked up.

disposable income : 自由に使える収入
ex) We had more disposable income.

indulge : verb / 甘やかす　(pronunciation is indʌ'lʤ)
ex) We began indulging ourselves.

Looking back when I was in 9th grade, my Japanese teacher gave us assignments which were summarizing articles from newspaper everyday during winter vacation. She told us we were able to improve Japanese skills by doing so, and it was for passing high school entrance exam which we would take place in the next three months. Now, I understand why my Japanese teacher imposed us to do it. I think summarizing articles from newspaper is a good idea to improve my reading and writing skills. Because they are formally well-written articles and are good education tools for learning new vocabulary. :)
