10 Reasons Why You Should Travel to Yakushima Island

Yakushima Island is a hidden treasure in Japan, full of stunning nature, unique things to do, and a calm, peaceful vibe. I spent five days there last year on my first trip and completely fell in love with it. If you’re looking for a place to relax, explore, and make amazing memories, here are 10 reasons why Yakushima should be on your travel list:

1. It’s Not Crowded

Unlike some of Japan’s busier tourist spots, Yakushima is refreshingly quiet. Even during peak seasons, you’ll find plenty of space to enjoy the scenery without feeling overwhelmed by crowds.

2. It’s a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site

This island is recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, so you know it’s something special. The rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes are truly one-of-a-kind.

3. See the Legendary Jomon Sugi

Jomon Sugi is an ancient cedar tree that’s believed to be over 3,000 to 7,000 years old. The hike to reach it is a bit challenging, but standing before this massive tree feels like stepping into a piece of history.

4. Feel the Magic of Princess Mononoke

Fans of Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke will feel as though they’ve stepped into the film. The lush, moss-covered forests of Yakushima inspired the movie's setting, offering a magical experience for anime enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Yakushima has it all—towering mountains, gorgeous waterfalls, and beautiful beaches. Whether you’re into hiking or just soaking up amazing views, this island won’t disappoint.

6. Fresh Seafood That’s Top-Notch

Seafood on Yakushima is as fresh as it gets. From sashimi to the famous flying fish dishes, every bite is a treat for your taste buds.

7. Enjoy Affordable, High-Quality Eats

Yakushima offers delicious, high-quality food at reasonable prices, like matcha soft serve that's nearly half the price of Tokyo's.

8. Relax in Hot Springs

Yakushima has plenty of hot springs (onsen), including some seaside ones that only show up during low tide. Taking a soak is the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

9. See Wild Animals

The island is home to Yakushima monkeys and deer, which you can spot roaming around. Just remember to keep a respectful distance—no feeding allowed!

Yakushima is a place of inspiration and transformation for many. Some Japanese people have even moved from bustling cities like Tokyo to make Yakushima their home, drawn by its spiritual energy, natural beauty, and peaceful way of life.
