How to Make Goroshi - Traditional Dessert of Southern Fukuoka, Japan

When I was a child, my grandmother used to make Japanese foods from scratch. For instance, her miso soup had vegetables she grew, fish broth made with dried infant sardines, and miso paste she made from scratch. She also often made desserts for her grandchildren. After coming back from school, I really enjoyed her homemade desserts at home almost every day.

Today, I'm going to share with you one of traditional desserts of Southern Fukuoka, which is my hometown. She sometimes made this local dessert, goroshi (ごろし). This is not famous local cuisine, so I think that most Japanese people don't know what goroshi is and even have never hard of it unless they are elderly people who live in Southern Fukuoka. Even though my husband also grew up in Southern Fukuoka, he didn't know what goroshi is.

Goroshi is local dessert made with flour and water. It's long and flat dessert often coated with kinako (きなこ, きな粉), Japanese roasted soybean flour. It tastes similar to abekawa mochi I shared with you in my previous entry, but goroshi is not sticky at all. It's more like noodles than mochi.

I also love goroshi with sweet soy sauce, which is called sato joyu (砂糖醤油) in Japan. It tastes like mitarashi sauce (みたらし), but sato joyu is not thick at all. It's simply made with sugar and soy sauce. My husband also loved groshi with sweet soy sauce. :)

Today, I'm going to share how to make goroshi with you. It's pretty easy to make, so I hope you can try it. :)

Ingredients (6 Servings)

For Goroshi
5 oz (150g) of All Purpose Flour
2.4 oz (70g) of Lukewarm Water
Nip of Salt

For Kinako, Roasted Soybean Flour
1 Tablespoon of Kinako
1 Tablespoon of Sugar (Add more sugar if you have a sweet tooth.)

For Sato Joyu, Sweet Soy Sauce
1 Tablespoon of Soy Sauce
1 Tablespoon of Sugar (Add more sugar if you have a sweet tooth.)

1. Mix flour and salt. Add lukewarm water and knead the dough for about three to five minutes. Place it in bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it rest in the room temperature for an hour.

2. Sprinkle a little flour over cutting board. Divide the dough into small pieces.

Roll out each dough to form a long shape.

Pull the dough to shape an evenly thick and long.

3. Bring water to a boil. Put the all dough in boiling water. Cook the dough for five minutes.

4. Rinse them with running water. Drain the water. Now, goroshi is ready. :)

For Kinako Goroshi (きな粉ごろし)
Kinako, Roasted Soybean Flour

1. Put sugar and kinako in a cup.

Mix them thoroughly. You can add more sugar if you like.

2. Add goroshi in the mixture of sugar and kinako. Coat it with the mixture.

3. Serve and enjoy!

My husband purchased this sweetened chocolate kinako at a Japanese supermarket.

It tastes like soft chocolate! I think you can make it with kinako, sugar and cocoa powder.

For Sweet Soy Sauce Goroshi (砂糖醤油ごろし)

1. Mix sugar and soy sauce. Add more sugar if you like.

2. Dip the goroshi in the sauce. Enjoy!

Kohl's Haul - 2017 Black Friday Sale

Black Friday sales start earlier nowadays. On November 19, Kohl's started their Black Friday Sale online. It was Sunday night! I ordered some items from Kohl's and received most of them on Thanksgiving Day! I thought my Black Friday Day shopping had been finished before Black Friday came. :) I was able to get many items with super great deals. In addition, I paid my order with Kohl's gift cards which I had purchased with 20% discounts in advance. I also purchased my items through Ebates because they were offering 6% cashback. If you are interested in shopping portal sites such as Ebates, you can check my previous entry, Online Shopping Tip - How Much Have I Received with Using Ebates, TopCashback and Ibotta?. Anyway, I'm going to share with you what I purchased with Kohl's Black Friday Sale.

Knee High Riding Boots
I wanted to purchase some new boots with this Black Friday sale because my brown riding boots which I also purchased at Kohl's three years ago were a little worn out. This time, I decided to purchase these Knee High Riding Boots. They were originally $79.99 but were on sale for $16.99 with a 15% off promo code, but they were actually about $13.59 with the Khol's gift card deal. In addition, I will receive $1.01 cashback from Ebates, so these boots will be $12.58 after everything! I've already worn them twice and really love these grey boots. They are very comfortable to walk in. :)

Ankle Boots
I also purchased these Ankle Boots because they had great reviews. They were originally $69.99 but were on sale for $16.99 with a 15% off promo code, but they were actually about $13.59 with the Khol's gift card deal. In addition, I will receive $1.01 cashback from Ebates, so these boots will be $12.58 after everything!

American Tourister Burst Spinner Luggage
Because my husband and I are going to visit Japan next month, we were looking for new suitcases. We also went to our local T.J. Maxx to see suitcases a few days before we actually purchased this luggage. When I found that Kohl's was offering great deals on many suitcases, I thought these were the best deals I've ever seen!  I purchased this 28-inch American Tourister Burst Spinner Luggage . This was originally $259.99 but was on sale for $50.99 with a 15% off promo code, but it was actually about $40.79 with the Kohl's gift card deal. In addition, I will receive $3.05 cashback from Ebates, and I will submit a $10 rebate for it, so this 28-inch suitcase will be $27.74 after everything!

Skyway Oasis 2.0 Hardside Spinner Luggage
I also purchased this 24-inch Skyway Oasis 2.0 Hardside Spinner Luggage. This was originally $224.99 but was on sale for $50.99 with a 15% off promo code, but they were actually about $40.79 with the Kohl's gift card deal. In addition, I will receive $3.05 cashback from Ebates,  and I will submit a $10 rebate for it, so this 24-inch suitcase will be $27.74 after everything!

Microfleece Pants
I purchased these Microfleece Pants. They were originally $24 but were on sale for $10.19 with a 15% off promo code, but they were actually about $8.15 with the Khol's gift card deal. In addition, I will receive $0.61 cashback from Ebates, so these pants will be $7.54 after everything!

Two-Piece Microfleece Pajama
I purchased the two-piece Microfleece Pajama because I thought that I would need the warmest pajama in Japan next month. Japan is very cold in winter! It was originally $30 but was on sale for $8.49 with a 15% off promo code, but it was actually about $6.79 with the Khol's gift card deal. In addition, I will receive $0.50 cashback from Ebates, so it will be $6.29 after everything! This PJ is very soft and light. :)

Flannel Lounge Pants
I bought these men's Flannel Lounge Pants for my husband. These were originally $18 but was $8.49 with a 15% off promo code, but they were actually about $6.79 with the Khol's gift card deal. In addition, I will receive $0.50 cashback from Ebates, so these pants will be $6.29 after everything!

Because Kohl's was offering a $15 Kohl's Cash with purchasing of $50. I earned a $45 Kohl's Cash. If truth be told, I've already sold my Kohl's Cash for $39 on Ebay since I thought I wouldn't use it.

I also used a $10 off Kohl's coupon code which I received from Discover credit card. Discover often gives away Kohl's coupon code. You need to be Discover credit card member to get a coupon code, but you don't have to use your Discover credit card to pay your order.

The total retail price was $706.96 but these cost only $90.76, and I earned $34 on Ebay (after Ebay fee). They are like $56.76, so it came out 91.9% off! I think it was the greatest deal I've ever seen on Black Friday! :)

These Are My Kohl's Shopping Tips! ;))
・Buy gift cards with great deal in advance. I usually purchase ones at drugstores.
・Use coupon code (You can also find coupon codes on Ebates.).
・Always purchase through shopping portal sites such as Ebates and Topcashback.
・If you think you won't use your Kohl's cash, just sell it on Ebay.

Now, Kohl's gift card is on sale at Rite Aide through December 2. When you purchase a $25 Kohl's gift card, you can get 500 Plenti Points, which is $5 worth and can be used at Rite Aid, Macy's and etc. Indeed, I purchased Kohl's gift cards (limit 2) for next shopping at Kohl's. ;)

Today only, Ibotta, a shopping portal App I mentioned in my previous entry, is offering 20% cashback on mobile shopping from most stores including Kohl's.

     Happy Cyber Monday!
