Last Sunday, my husband and I had BBQ in our apartment community. We had 1.5lb of bought baby back pork ribs at Pavilions a week before that day. It was pretty good tasty! We also loved grilled corns. These tasted sweet and juicy. :)
Fourth of July is coming this week, so I think that many residents want to have BBQ this week. Our apartment has only five gas grills. Maybe we will pass this week. :)

The Second Mole Removal
Today, I went to the beauty clinic where I got moles removed. Three weeks ago, I got moles removed and all scabs came off within 10 days. These looked better than before, but some of them were not completely gone. I decided to go back there because the woman who had removed my moles told me that she would try it again for free if moles come back in the future. She was not as nice as before but removed 15 moles again. Anyhow, I will stay home mostly for nursing study at least for 26 days, and I hope these will heal well until the day of NCLEX. The most stressful thing will be that I cannot wash my face for a day. Even the day after tomorrow, I have to wash my face as gently as possible in order not to remove scabs.
After the mole removal, my husband and I went to Vietnamese restaurant for lunch. My husband ordered chow mein.
I usually order Pho Ga when I go to Vietnamese restaurants, but they didn't have it. They had many kinds of beef Pho though. I don't really like beef Pho... That's why I didn't know what I should have, so I asked a waitress for her recommendation. She recommended me this duck noodle. It was first time for me to have this, but this was pretty good. :)

My Favorite Japanese Clothing Store
When I lived in Japan, my favorite clothing store was Natural Beauty Basic because their clothing is very basic and also trendy. In addition, their clothing was affordable for me at the time. :)
Because I don't live in Japan now, I can't buy their clothing anymore. Moreover, most clothing in the U.S. is more inexpensive than the ones in Japan, and I am not an income earner now, so their clothing is not very affordable for me anymore. :(
However, I sometimes look at their site to see style that they recommend because I still like their basic fashion. :) These are their recommendations.

Hollister Haul
Today, I ordered some clothing at Hollister because they were having a pretty good sale. They were offering $20 off discounts when you ordered $75!
This pink shorts were originally $19.50 but were on sale for $8.31. Now, I am obsessed with shorts for wearing at home. It's because even though I stay at home all day long for my study, I want to enjoy fashion. :)
Hollister Curved Hem Short-Shorts |
This white t-shirt was originally $24.50 but was on sale for $8.31. I think white t-shirt is very basic, but I haven't owned any white t-shirt these days, so I just wanted to add it for my basic wardrobe. :)
Embarcadero T-Shirt |
My husband also ordered two t-shirts for $6.04 each and two hoodies for $16.62 each. He told me that he wouldn't need any more t-shirts. Haha...

Taking a Walk to Refresh the Brain
These days, I have been studying for NCLEX for about 9 hours a day. That's why I have been staying at home all day long. Yesterday, I realized that I hadn't gone out from my home for several days (It happens many times though). Today, my husband and I took a walk to the closest shopping mall from our home in order to refresh my brain. :) It was our first time to walk there, and it took us only 20 minutes. We went to Kohl's because they were having a one day sale today. Nothing caught my eye there but we were able to enjoy window-shopping. :)

Billy Joel - Uptown Girl
Today, I listened to the song, Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. I am familiar with this song because this song was always playing at a drug store that I used to go on the way home from hospital which I worked for. It reminds me my old days. :) I used to purchase many household items, personal care items, and medicines. :)
Lyrics
Oooh...
Uptown girl
She's been living in her uptown world
I bet she never had an back street guy
I bet her mama never told her why
I'm gonna try for an uptown girl
She's been living in her white bread world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now she's looking for a downtown man
That's what I am
And when she knows what
She wants from her time
And when she wakes up
And makes up her mind
She'll see I'm not so tough
Just because
I'm in love with an uptown girl
You know I've seen her in her uptown world
She's getting tired of her high class toys
And all her presents from her uptown boys
She's got a choice
Oooh...
Uptown girl
You know I can't afford to buy her pearls
But maybe someday when my ship comes in
She'll understand what kind of guy I've been
And then I'll win
And when she's walking
She's looking so fine
And when she's talking
She'll say that she's mine
She'll say I'm not so tough
Just because
I'm in love
With an uptown girl
She's been living in her white bread world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now she's looking for a downtown man
That's what I am
Oooh...
Uptown girl
She's my uptown girl
Don't You know I'm in love

Our new Plants
These days, my husband has been looking for plants. He told me that green plants help relax and bring fortune into home. Haha... Anyhow, we hadn't had any plant, and he bought cacti last week. When we lived in Japan, we had some cacti since cactus is easy to take care of.
Last Sunday, we went to Home Depot because he wanted to get another new plant. He looked at all the plants carefully. Then, we went to Trader Joe's to buy groceries. He found this basil plant for $2.99 there. I told him that the basil is very useful because we can eat them with pizza, sandwich, and panini. Because it was very affordable price, he bought it. The smell of basil filled in our room, and it made us hungry. :) I want to make pizza with the basil leaves in the near future.

DSW Haul
Today, my husband and I went to DSW because I received a $10 coupon by mail last month.
My husband wanted new shoes for his work and bought Crocs sandals. These were originally $34.99 but were on sale for $29.95. We ended up paying 19.95 with a $10 coupon. He told me that these were lowest price in Crocs sandals he has ever seen!
I have received a $10 DSW coupons several times this year, and I have been able to buy something with great deal at DSW these day. :) DSW obviously became one of my favorite stores. :)

Old Navy and Aeropostale Haul
Today, my husband and I went to Irvine Spectrum Center because we won Snapfive, which is Old Navy $5 coupon, again. :)
After we bought clothing at Old Navy, we headed toward Aeropostale because I know that they usually sell clothing with huge discounts.
As I expected, they were selling some clothing with over 70% off. Yey! :)
At Old Navy, I bought two navy tanks for $3 with tax (these were originally $12.) These came out 75% off! Because I wear tanks everyday, I wanted to buy these.
At Aeropostale, I bought pink sweat shorts for $3.99 (was originally $24.50) and gray sweat shorts for $3.99 (was originally $29.50). These came out 85% off! These shorts are very cute! I will wear these at home. During weekdays, I stay home all day long to study nursing. I am happy that I bought my new home wears. :)

New Muji Store in Southern California
As you may know, I like Muji very much. Yesterday, I was really excited because I heard a great news about Muji store opening in Southern California in November 2013! The new store will be located in Hollywood and will be U.S. flagship store, which will be the biggest store in the U.S.! I know that their products are slightly more expensive than in Japan, but I will definitely go there when they open! It's because I like to look at their products and want to see their new big store!
This is my entries related to Muji.

Drug Addiction - Heroin
These days, I have been focusing on studying for drug addictions because many quizzes for NCLEX are related to drug addictions. While drug addiction is a huge problem in the U.S., I didn't know what marijuana, cocaine, and heroin look like and how these affect human body.
Today, I watched the video which is about heroin addiction because by doing quizzes for nursing study today, I knew that one of symptoms of heroin addiction is hypoactive. I wanted to make sure how heroin works, and watching the video helped my nursing study.
Heroin is made with opium poppy, which is also a souse of many narcotics such as morphine. Morphine is used for alleviating strong pain, especially cancer pain.
The ways to administer heroin are various. The most heroin addicts prefer intravenous injection because it is the fastest route of the administration.

Progression of the Healing
It's been 10 days since I got moles removed. I was allowed to wash my face the day after mole removal, and I tried to wash my face as gently as possible. I avoided using my Clarisonic Mia2 for a while; as a result, my pores were clogged and my skin looked dirty. :(( After noticing about that, I used St. Ives Apricot Scrub for only my nose and forehead. I couldn't use make up for the first week and was very stressful. However, all scars sloughed within a week, and my skin looks much better than before. :) My husband told me that all scars were not very visible then. I need to look the progression of the healing in next few weeks. Then, if my moles appear again, I will go to the beauty clinic to get moles removed once again.

Great Deals at Pavilions
Today, my husband and I went shopping at grocery stores as usual Sundays. We went to Pavilions today because one of my Just for You coupons would expire soon. I loaded a free Starbucks Tall Refreshers Iced beverage coupon onto my Pavilions card last month, so we got a Very Berry Hibiscus Starbucks Refreshers for free. :)
We also got a Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, which was on sale for $2.99, for free because I also loaded a free coupon onto my Pavilions card as well. :) I have never eaten it, but I'd like to try it. If I didn't have the free coupon, I would never become interested in it because it looks too sweet. I wonder how it will taste.
We purchased a lot of meat there because Pavilions often has clearance sale for meat.
1.5 lb of baby back pork ribs was originally $16.99 but was $3 at clearance!
1.66 lb of chicken wings was originally $7.45 but was $0.81 at clearance.
Chicken breast sausage was originally $5.99 per package but $0.99 at clearance, and there was $1 off coupon on the package. So five packs of sausage came out to be free.
1 lb of shaved ham was originally $4.99 but was $0.99 at clearance.
1 lb of Papa Cantellas Sausage Chicken Cilantro was originally $4.49 but was $0.49 at clearance, and 1 lb of Papa Cantellas Sausage Chicken Chorizo was originally $4.94 but was $0.49 at clearance. We already boiled the raw sausages and ate some. These tasted unexpectedly great! We wrapped the rest of the sausages and stored them in the refrigerator.
The total original price was $71.80, but I paid $4.73. Somehow, I saved 93%! It looks extremely great shopping, but I used only five paper coupons, which were stuck on the packages of sausages. I didn't realize that I had loaded some other Just for You coupons onto my Pavilions card. I still don't know which Just for You coupons I used today though. That's why the final price was cheaper than I expected.
My husband and I really like Pavilions because they usually have secret sale which is not advertised! I also like Just for You program because they release free coupons once in a while, and I can try new products which I have never tried before. :)

CVS Haul
Today, I went to CVS and bought two Maybelline New York Color Show Nail Polish. As I mentioned in my previous entry, I became interested in it after reading a Yahoo article. I was looking for a great deal for it for a month. Today, I got a $2 Maybelline store coupon from CVS coupon machine. I have already gotten the same coupon this week, so I had two $2 store coupons! I decided to purchase these nail polishes. :) These were originally $4.19 each, but Maybelline cosmetic was buy one get 50 % off sale through this week, so the sale price for two nail polishes was $6.28. In addition, I used two $2 store coupons and two $1 manufacturer's coupons. I ended up paying $0.28 for two nail polishes. It was a great deal!
I have never tried blue nail polish. I usually tend to buy pink and beige nail polish. I have many navy colored clothing, so I think this blue nail polish will match my fashion... Maybe

Coining - Cao Gio
Today, I studied for NCLEX as usual, and I learned about one from of alternative medicine for the first time.
This is the question I studied today.
A 3-year-old Vietnamese child with a fever, decreased urine output, wheezing, and coughing is brought to the emergency department. On examination, the nurse discovers red, round, weltlike lesions on the child's upper back and chest. The nurse should consider that these lesions may be caused by:
(Answer) cultural practice
Explanation: The nurse should consider that the lesions may be caused by cultural practice. Many Vietnamese perform coining, a cultural practice in which a coin is repeatedly rubbed lengthwise on the oiled skin to rid the body of a disease. Coining can produce weltlike lesions on the child's back or chest, and children subjected to the practice are commonly thought to have been abused. Interviewing the family and assessing its cultural background help distinguish between abuse and culture practice. Shingles, a form of herpes zoster, is a communicable disease usually affecting immunocompromised individuals and older adults. The disease produces small crusty pustules on the lower back and trunk. The description of the lesions doesn't fit those produced by an allergic reaction.
I hadn't known about coining at all, so I searched the image of the coining on Internet. It looks very painful. If I didn't know coining, I would think this wired lesion was made by child abuse... I was glad to know that before I am embarrassed by my misinterpretation.
Coining, is also called coin rubbing and Cao Gio, is considered as alternative medicine for relieving pain, cold, chill, and so on among the Southeast Asians.
Alternative medicine is less popular in Japan. Japanese people prefer Western medicine, so people usually go to the hospital when they are sick. However, some people in other countries, especially some Asian countries, believe that Eastern medicine is also effective. I have never tried acupuncture, but all my Korean friends have tried it before. They told me that acupuncture relieves many symptoms, such as pain and cold.
Because many varieties of people are living in the U.S., I need to know many alternative medicines which I haven't known before in order to get nursing license. I have realized that registered nurse is required to have extensive knowledge about medicines, cultures, religions, and law. As I studied for NCLEX, I thought getting license of registered nurse is not easy at all.

Baja Fresh Mexican Grill
Tonight, my husband and I went to Baja Fresh Mexican Grill for dinner because we received a buy one get one free coupon from our apartment. :)
It was our first time to go there, and I was surprised that they have mango salsa! We became Mexican food fanatic after moving to the U.S. However, we have never seen mango salsa in any Mexican fast food restaurants. I have made mango salsa before, and this mango salsa was sweeter than the one I made.
My husband chose Burrito Mexicano Carnitas, and I chose Baja Buritto Steak.
Because we had a coupon, it cost only $6.99 for two burritos. It was a really great deal. :)

My Youtube Videos
Today, I uploaded two videos on my Youtube channel. I uploaded my dog's video last time, and my three-year old nephew in Japan really liked it. He watched it many times.
I told my sister that I saw a seal and a shark when my husband and I went to Newport Beach, and I recorded it. She asked me to inform her if I uploaded those videos on my Youtube channel.
I hope my nephew and niece liked them. I want to upload more videos which I recorded in Japan, but I will do it after passing NCLEX.
I meet my sister every two to three years because I cannot afford to buy airplane ticket to go to Japan every year. Even though I am living far away from my home country, I'm glad that I can share my videos with my sister through Youtube. Things are becoming more and more convenient. :)

If I Pass the Exam...
I have been studying for NCLEX all day long these days. I am still not confident with my knowledge though, especially pharmacology.
After passing NCLEX, I'd like to...
cook more often,
watch English DVD,
study medical terminology,
study English vocabularies,
record videos for my Youtube channel,
and review my blog to restudy expression and vocabularies.
I have another month until NCLEX, so I need to keep up my study.

Cliff Edwards - When You Wish Upon a Star
These day, I have often listened to the songs which were sung by Billy Joel, who is my current favorite singer. When You Wish Upon a Star is one of the songs, sung by Billy Joel. I traced the history of the song and knew that the song was not released by Billy Joel. In 1940, the song was written for the Walt Disney's movie, Pinocchio. In the movie, it was sung by Cliff Edwards who is the character of the Jiminy Cricket.
Lyrics
When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dreams
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfilment of
Their secret longing
Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true
Lyrics
When a star is born, they receive a gift or two
One of them is this, they have the power to make a dream come true
When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires will come to you
If your heart is in your dream, no request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star as dreamers do
Fate is kind she brings to those who love
Love's sweet fulfillment of their secret longing
Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true
Ooh, like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and I sees you through
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true, ooh, ooh

Stay Home All Day Long
I usually go out every weekend, but I just stayed home today. It's because my scars became remarkable. It looks worse than yesterday. My skin around the scars is slightly swollen now. It looks like anthema of rubella. That's why I didn't go outside today. Besides that, I need to avoid UV ray for a while.

I Got Moles Removed
Today, I went to Westminster to get moles removed. I had been afraid and hesitated to get them done for a long time because I was not sure whether it would be successful. I always wanted to get moles removed, but I liked my face at the same time. If I had needed to get surgery for mole removal, my face would have changed slightly due to incision. However, I knew that my moles could be removed by laser procedures, and I found a beauty clinic which has many positive reviews. Finally, I decided to get my moles removed, and I thought it was the best time for mole removal for me because I will stay at home mostly for nursing study for at least seven weeks, so I won't be embarrassed by my scars.
It was pretty easy to find the clinic, which was located in a huge Vietnamese mall, but when my husband and I walked inside, I had second thoughts about this clinic because it looked like an old style pharmacy or something like that. There was only one Vietnamese man who looked like age 60 sitting on the sofa near the entrance. He spoke very little English and asked me if I had an appointment. I didn't make appointment because when I called them, they said that appointment was not necessary. At the time, there was no patient, so I could get my procedure done right after walking in.
The treatment room was very small, and there was a woman who spoke very little English as well. She asked me if I was Vietnamese. It was little difficult to understand what she was saying but was mostly no problem because I know Vietnamese accents. I was told to lie down on the bed, and then I asked her if I could get all moles removed. She told me that it would cost $150 for 15 mole removal, and I thought it was very inexpensive. She sterilized my face with alcohol and put topical anesthetic ointments on my face. During the laser procedures, I smelled burning flesh, and I felt sharp stings. She suggested me to remove one more mole which was on my eyelid, that scared me but was done successfully. In the end, I got 17 moles removed.
She told me not to touch my face today, and I can wash my face from next morning. She gave me two small packs of antibiotic ointments and instructed me to apply them after five days. (After getting home, I was wondering why after five days...) She told me that it would take a week for small moles and for two week for bigger one to heal. She told me that if moles appear again, she would try to remove them for free.
When I tried to check out, they told me that they strongly prefer to get paid by cash even though they accept credit card as well. We had only $149 (That was all we had at the time. We paid with coins too.), and they said it was okay because they still wanted to avoid to get paid by credit card.
After that, we went to a Vietnamese supermarket because the clinic was located in a huge Vietnamese mall. However, we didn't buy anything there because my husband was exhausted emotionally. I didn't know why, but he told me that it was very hard for him to see the procedure, and if I were his daughter, he would never have allowed me to get a mole on my eyelid removed because it looked very dangerous. He told me that he didn't want to see something hurt me.
We went to a Vietnamese restaurant, and I ordered Pho Ga as usual. After lunch, my husband wanted to drink Vietnamese coffee, but we gave up because we didn't have any cash at that time because we used all our cash for mole removal. :)
I hope all scars will heal well and all moles will be completely gone.

Drug Addiction - Cannabis
I worked as a nurse at a psychiatry hospital for three years in Japan. The hospital is one of the most huge psychiatry hospitals in Japan. Even though the hospital had over 600 beds for psychiatry patients, I never had any chance to see patients with drug addictions, such as cannabis and cocaine. In addition, I don't have acquaintances that have drug addictions in Japan. Marijuana addiction is not zero in Japan, but it is pretty rare for the general public. That's why I don't have experience caring for those patients and lack sufficient knowledge for drug addictions. (1,759 people who were related with marijuana in Japan were arrested in 2011,
and 99 people who were related to cocaine were arrested in 2011.) Unlike Japan, drug addiction is huge problem in the U.S., especially with teenagers. I have often heard that parents of teenagers are always trying to protect their children from drug problem. One day, one of my friends who lives in LA told me that his roommate smoked marijuana illegally and asked him to smoke together. I was surprised about the fact that. I thought that getting marijuana in the U.S. is not hard comparing to Japan. In fact, California legalized medical cannabis in 1996, and marijuana smoke was listed as a cancer agent in California in 2009.
As I studied for NCLEX, I realized that I need to improve my knowledge for drug addictions in order to work in CA. Yesterday, I watched YouTube videos about marijuana users. I had no idea about cannabis cookies, drink, and ice cream before watching them.

What I Should Have Responsed
I have been studying with NCLEX-RN 10,000 – Powered by PrepU for a month now. The questions are more difficult than I had expected. However, the contents of the questions are related to situations which are more likely to happen in a realistic medical field. Studying these questions are very useful when you work indeed.
When I worked as a nurse in Japan, I encountered these situations and often had a dilemma. I didn't know what I should have said to patients and their families. I took an exam for registered nurse in Japan 13 years ago, so I don't remember what was on the exam, but I think I tried to memorize pathological, pharmacological and anatomical studies mostly. Therefore, how nurses respond in situations for moral support were sometimes various. As a nurse, of course, I needed to care for patients emotionally, but I didn't actually learn how to deal with their mental conflicts and grief. When my patient who was near death expressed fear and anxiety, I didn't know what I should have done to reduce their stress. I never said, "Are you afraid of dying?", which is the right response in this situation according to the U.S textbook for RN. I never said those words to terminal patients the words which were pertinent to death. However, I learned from my textbook that helping them to verbalize their fear is very important for emotional supports. If I had known that fact 13 years ago, I could have dealt with those situations better.
Studying for NCLEX is not easy for me, but I am not bored from it somehow. It's because I desire to become a better nurse.

My 30-day Challenge on June
I started 30-day challenge again on June 1st. I am trying three challenges this time.
My first challenge is going to my apartment gym everyday and working out there for at least 20 minutes every day. In the past a month, I tended to be lazy again, so I didn't go to gym every day. I knew that exercising everyday is very important for my backache through my previous challenges. Now, I stay at home all day long because I don't go to school and need to study nursing at home. That's why I need to work out more than before to maintenance my health in good shape. My husband and I have been working out for five days now, and we have already noticed the benefits of everyday exercise. We could get back into the swing of things. :)
My second challenge is brushing my teeth three times a day. This challenge sounds silly, but it is very important for me as well. I've been waking up late these day because I don't go to school and am obviously a night owl. When I didn't wake up in the morning, I tended to brush my teeth twice a day. I want to keep my oral health in good shape as well. I know I should wake up early in the morning, but I can concentrate for my study at night.
Finally, my last challenge is updating my other blog, which is for my nursing study, everyday and review at least 10 questions on my blog. In this way, I can check my blog and study with my smart phone anytime anywhere when I have a spare time. Besides that, I hope to study 100 questions each day, but I can't to do it on weekends (Doing 100 questions is not my 30-day challenge thought). I am going to take NCLEX next month. Therefore, I need to keep up my nursing study very seriously.
I hope I will accomplish these challenges!

Leopard Shark at Newport Pier
While my husband and I were at Newport Pier last Saturday, a fisherman who was standing next to me became suddenly excited! Apparently, he got a nibble on the hook.
Because the fish was very heavy, some other fishermen helped him catch it. They used huge treble hooks to get it up. He finally caught the fish in front of a large audience.
It was a shark. Many people took pictures.
After going back home, I searched it to figure out the name of this kinds of shark, which is turned out to be a leopard shark.
I was excited to witness the scene of this fishing.
I also recorded videos during this fishing.
