Hiram M. Chittenden Locks - Traveling Seattle, Day 2 - 2/9

        After visiting Boeing Factory, my husband and I went to Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, which is a complex of locks that sits at the west end of Salmon Bay and is also known as the Ballard Locks, during our travel in Seattle on May 24.

       We found that there were some little gardens decorated near the visitor center.

       This complex includes two locks. We watched how the locks worked for the boats passing through the bridge.

       There were so many seagulls sitting around the lock chamber. They looked like they were waiting for something. When the water pressure came up from the bottom, a great number of seagulls started swooping down to catch fish.

The Fish Ladder

       We were able to see just only two small fish in the fish ladder.

       On the way back, we found a duck family around the spillway dam. The baby chicks were very small and so adorable! The ducks occasionally slipped from where they stayed, and the chicks got separated from the parent duck. Around this canal, we also saw a seal and egret. I hope the baby chicks will survive here!

       We enjoyed Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and stayed here longer than we expected. Then, we headed toward Fremont Troll.
